To gain a better understanding of the evolution of polymer surfaces under cold plasmas, model polymer surfaces were studied. The degradation products and the gas phase were investigated by mass and optical emission spectrometry. Their evolution versus time and power enable us to propose a mechanism that involves atomic oxygen, OH* and H* radicals. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
