Linear polyelectrolytes have been prepared by quaternizing with methyl bromide the polyester obtained by condensation between succinic anhydride and methyldiethanolamine. Molecular weights, determined by end group titration, were in the range 2000-43,000. The polysalts hydrolyze in water but are stable in absolute methanol. Viscosities in methanol of the polysalt of highest molecular weight conform to the empirical equation: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \eta _{sp} /C = A/(1 + BC^{1/2} )$$\end{document}Conductance curves are sharply concave upward on a Λ - c1/2 scale, indicating a high degree of association of counter ions with the polycation at finite concentrations. Estimates of limiting mobility suggest a curved rodlike structure for the polycation at infinite dilution.
