Notes:
An assessment of the possible collapse mechanisms for solution-grown pyramidal polymer crystals is made, taking into account electron microscope observations and the mechanics of the loading situation. That comprehensive collapse always occurs is shown not to be as self-evident as is normally assumed, even though the more exacting criteria for its establishment are indeed usually met. Bending of lamellar crystals is found to account for many observations, although an alternative means of tilting molecular chains, the “differential shear tilt model” is also considered.
