Notes: Summary 1. It has been established that polyisobutene improves the antiwear properties of lubricating oils, the effectiveness being greater for polymers of lower molecular weight. 2. The improvement in antiwear properties of a base oil by polymer compounding is explained by the ability of the polyisobutene to form an adsorbed layer of polymer molecules at the frictional surface, setting up a stronger oil film. 3. The antiwear properties of polymer-compounded oils drop off as the oil temperature is increased, but to a lesser extent than is the case for conventional oils.
