Conclusions 1. A study was made of the circular dichroism (CD) spectra and UV absorption spectra of some epimeric at C-20 steroids of the pregnane and isopregnane series, containing the Δ4-3-keto grouping. 2. In the pregnane series the 20β-epimers are characterized by a higher amplitude of the n→π *-transition in the CD spectra than for their 20α-epimers. The reverse relationship is observed for the isopregnane series. The data of the UV absorption spectra are in agreement with the results of the CD spectra. 3. The CD curves and the UV absorption spectra can be used to study the remote interactions in steroids of the isopregnane and pregnane series. 4. The theory was expressed that the effect of substituents on a remote chromophore in the studied compounds is due mainly to the conformational transmission effect, caused by a change in the configuration at C-20 and C-17 of the asymmetric centers of the steroid molecule.
