Conclusion The maximum currents which can be passed through a low pressure plasma can be predicted within a factor of 2 by relatively simple arguments provided the currents are not so large that self magnetic constriction occurs. The effect of the self-magnetic field is to raise the limiting currents but this limit cannot be predicted without a knowledge of the effect of magnetic fields on sheath conditions.
