Summary Hydrogen photoproduction has been achieved by coupling free or immobilized hydrogenases from Desulfovibrio species to illuminated chloroplasts through different electron mediators. Whereas D. gigas flavodoxin or ferredoxin I cannot directly mediate the electron flux from chloroplasts to hydrogenase, the addition of these mediators considerably enhances the H2 photoproduction of a system including cytochrome C3. These immobilized hydrogenases exhibit good stability under working conditions and can be re-used.
