Summary Thylakoid membranes isolated from spinach leaves were used as the biological sensing material to elaborate a biosensor for the detection of small amount of the herbicides atrazine and diuron. Free and immobilized thylakoid membranes were compared for their responses to inhibition by herbicides by following the variation of the photocurrent. Immobilized thylakoid membranes were twice as sensitive to inhibition by herbicides than the native thylakoids.
