Abstract This paper relates practical aspects of numerical models to certain basic properties of the atmospheric boundary layer in order to distinguish more clearly what parts of general boundary-layer description have to be well specified and what parts are of lesser importance. Several basic questions about the boundary layer are considered to which rather tentative answers are given. Some emphasis is given to the problem of the evolving boundary layer and to detailed geostrophic drag coefficients for the U.K.
