Abstract The large dsDNA viruses that are known to infect eukaryotic algae show promise as genetic vectors for algal biotechnology. The large size (150–330 kbp) of these viral genomes may permit insertion of large sequences of foreign DNA. The viruses infecting filamentous marine brown algae appear to be integrated into the genomes of their hosts, and may provide integration mechanisms that can be used for directing insertion of foreign genes into algal chromosomes.
