Abstract Spectrophotometric, chromatographic, and ion-exchange procedures were used to follow microbial transformation and degradation of lignin-related compounds during incubation in liquid culture. Analyses of solvent extracts from fermentation media showed that selected mine soil microorganisms were able to modify one or more of the structural components of vanillic and ferulic acids, including methoxyl groups, carbon side-chains, and aromatic rings.
