Notes: Abstract In this paper the risks that occur in testing compliance with air quality standards are defined and discussed. These risks result from the definition of suitable probability distribution parameters, from the substitution of ‘immission doses’ by ‘immission’ concentrations, from information theory aspects of the space-time assessment, and from the imperfection of measurement devices. In a similar way as has been followed up in an earlier paper concerning the derivation of air quality standards the procedure of testing complicance with standards has been divided into single logical steps. A global risk, defined as the probability for a wrong decision is derived from the risks occurring in the derivation of standards and those occurring in compliance tests. This global risk has to be accepted in monitoring air quality.
