Notes: Summary The permeability for alcohol of the normal human urinary bladder is of no practical forensic significance. Results obtained following instillation of a 0.28% solution of ethyl alcohol into the urinary bladder conform with the findings of Haggard et al. The permeability for alcohol can be considerably increased in cases of inflammation of the bladder. Loss of alcohol from the bladder is due to diffusion, which is related to the balance between blood and urine alcohol concentrations. Changes in bladder alcohol levels are mostly caused by the addition of fresh renal urine. Significant changes by diffusion may occur if the volume of urine in the bladder is small. Changes of urine alcohol concentration after death are inferior to those taking place during life. High urine alcohol levels with concomitant low blood alcohol levels may occur following brain injury or intoxications after periods of oliguria or anuria.
