Notes:
Summary The lead concentrations in the bones of skeletons of mediaeval inhabitants of England were found to be greatly in excess of those of contemporary populations and greater than could be reasonably accounted for by the probable levels of lead exposure during life. The concentrations of lead in the soil in the immediate vicinity of the skeletons approximated to the concentrations found in the bones, and it was considered that over the centuries the two had come into approximate equilibrium. The results from other studies are compared with those of the present one, and it is concluded that palaeontological remains offer doubtful criteria for the in-vivo assessment of lead exposure in past populations.
