Abstract Experimental results are given for the performance of a vernier task without visual input. Entropies obtained from the distribution of errors in performing this task are compared with entropies obtained from earlier experiments with visual input. The entropy difference gives the information in bits transmitted by the visual system. An information capacity for the visual system in performing the vernier task is deduced on the assumption that temporal summation of information is limited by the occurrence of an involuntary saccade.
