Notes:
Summary Cytodifferentiation during early spermatogenesis in the calyptoblastic hydroid, Campanularia flexuosa, was studied at the fine structural level. Clusters of spermatogonia-like cells are found in gonangial sporosacs near the mesoglea. Early events in spermiogenesis include: a gradual elongation of the sperm head and nucleus; close apposition of nuclear envelope to chromatin; positioning of four mitochondria at the posterior portion of the nucleus; formation of a single, simple flagellum from a basal body located in the center of the mitochondrial quadrangle; a high degree of Golgi activity, possibly involved in the production of a multiple acrosome complex.
