Abstract Within the multiple scattering model it is discussed how to treat the annihilation interaction in antiproton-nucleus ( $$\bar p - A$$ ) collisions by imposing the constraint that the real annihilation of the incident $$\bar p$$ can take place only once. The cross sections, mean collision numbers and average multiplicities are given both for the $$\bar p - A$$ annihilation and non-annihilation events. The multiplicity difference between $$\bar p - A$$ andp-A collisions is shown to be useful as a test of the annihilation mechanism
