Notizen: Abstract The TIPS procedure can provide for emergent decompression of the portal venous system and cessation of life-threatening hemorrhage from gastroesophageal varices. It is a highly sophisticated procedure that should be done only by very experienced interventional radiologists because of the important complications that can occur and are directly related to the procedure. Knowledge of the technical aspects of the procedure that put the patient at increased risk for procedure-related complications can reduce the likelihood of mishap. Similarly, knowledge of the contraindications for TIPS will improve the screening of patients who clinically are at increased risk of post-procedure complications.
