In order to clarify the role of Ti addition in improving the coercivity of Nd-TM-B magnets, the microstructure was studied extensively using an analytical transmission electron microscope. Electron micrographs revealed several phases in the Ti-doped Nd15(Fe0.585Co0.3Ni0.1Ti0.015)77B8 magnet, namely Nd2(Fe0.6Co0.3Ni0.1)14B, Nd(Fe0.8−xCoxNi0.2)4B (x=0.25–0.4), Nd-TM, and TiB2 phases. Some of the TiB2 precipitates are formed in the Nd-TM phases during the solidification of the magnet alloy, and the others precipitate during the sintering process. Fine TiB2 precipitates restrain grain growth of the magnetic phase during sintering, which leads to a fine-grained structure. It is suggested that the coercivity of Ti-doped Nd-TM-B magnets increases due to the presence of TiB2 precipitates.
