Abstract Methionine sulphoximine resistant (Msxr) glutamine synthetase (GS) strain and ethylene diamine resistant (Eda1) GS strains of Nostoc muscorum did not show a cross-resistance relationship. The parents, Msxr-GS and Het Nif strains mutated spontaneously to the Eda1 phenotype, and the results of spontaneous mutation frequency suggested a role of the gln A allele in control of its mutation frequency of Edar-GS phenotype. Edar clones comprised two functionally distinct classes, the Edars class having severely defective GS activity and excreting ammonia and the Edart class having a slightly defective GS activity and assimilating EDA like a fixed nitrogen source.
