Abstract The levels of intracellular adenine nucleotides, energy charge and oxygen consumption, have been investigated in vegetative cells of Azotobacter vinelandii grown in chemically-defined medium and dialysed-soil medium. Microorganisms cultured in dialysed-soil medium displayed lower oxygen consumption activities and energy charge values than those cultured in chemically-defined medium. Also, the ATP/ADP ratio was much higher in vegetative cells grown in chemically-defined medium, and the intracellular levels of ATP were lower in cells cultured in dialysed-soil medium.
