Abstract With a long-term chronic illness, family structure and functioning often become impaired. Family members require assistance in understanding the nature and progression of the illness, and in assuming new roles to preserve the stability of the family unit. This case study describes how a community health nurse used role supplementation to assist one family effectively to cope with the changes associated with Alzheimer's disease.
