Notes: A new linear regression method is applied to determine the rate constants from time-dependent profiles. The method is effective for obtaining the rate constants of such consecutive processes as vibrational relaxation. The ambiguity of ordinary nonlinear analysis is eliminated by the linearization of regression equations. Because the new method also determines relative detectivity, the nascent vibrational distributions immediately following reactions or photolysis can be obtained simultaneously. In order to demonstrate the reliability of the new method under practical conditions, several examples of analysis of the data with noise are shown in detail. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
