CsHg an Unusual Variant of the CsCl Structure. Preparation, Crystal Structure, and Physical PropertiesPreparation, crystal structure, and electrical resistivity of the golden colored and air sensitive compound CsHg, which crystallizes in the triclinic system, are described. The structure of CsHg (isotypic to KHg) represents an hitherto unrecognized variant of the CsCl type, which leads to the formation of square planar Hg4 units. CsHg forms from the elements by a drastic shrinking of the molar volume (30%). In spite of this fact, which is more typical for ionic compounds, CsHg shows a metallic temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity in contrast to the structurally related semiconducting CsAu.

Darstellung, Kristallstruktur und elektrischer Widerstand der goldfarbenen, luftempfindlichen und triklin kristallisierenden Verbindung CsHg werden beschrieben. Der Aufbau des mit KHg isotypen CsHg ist eine bisher unerkannte, triklin verzerrte Variante des CsCl-Typs, die durch die Bildung isolierter, quadratisch planarer Hg4-Einheiten gekennzeichnet ist. CsHg bildet sich aus den Elementen unter drastischer Schrumpfung des Molvolumens (30%). Trotz dieses eigentlich für ionische und nicht für intermetallische Verbindungen typischen Verhaltens, zeigt CsHg im Gegensatz zum strukturell verwandten CsAu eine metallische Temperaturcharakteristik des elektrischen Widerstandes.
