Abstract Mössbauer spectra in Fe−N and Fe−C as quenched martensites of high interstitial contents are analyzed in terms of Fe atoms with zero, one and two interstitials first neighbours. The distribution of carbon atoms favors C−Cl/2〈111〉 carbon pairs whereas that of nitrogen displays short range repulsion. Tendency towards clustering and ordering will show up in respective martensites during further room temperature aging.
