Summary 1. In the presence of Cignolin the transplantability of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells is inhibited. 2. Parallel to cytostasis the incorporation of precursors of DNA, RNA and of proteins decreases. 3. Whereas glycolysis is significantly inhibited by a concentration of 10−3 M respiration is not markedly altered. 4. A reaction between the DNA and Cignolin occurs in vitro. Therefore the results of the experiments with intact cells are discussed on the basis of a binding of the Cignolin to DNA. 5. The effect of Cignolin resembles that of alkylating agents. These compounds also cause an inhibition of glycolysis without influencing respiration. On the other hand they cause a decrease of incorporation of precursors of DNA and RNA too.

Zusammenfassung 1. Unter Cignolin wird eine Hemmung der Transplantierbarkeit von Ehrlich-Ascites-Tumorzellen beobachtet. 2. Parallel zum Auftreten der Cytostase ist der Einbau von Vorstufen der DNS, der RNS und des Protein erniedrigt. 3. Während die Glykolyse bei einem Gehalt von 10−3Mol/l an Cignolin deutlich gehemmt wird, ist die Atmung nicht meßbar beeinflußt. 4. Eine Reaktion zwischen der DNS und Cignolin in vitro wird beobachtet. Die Befunde werden als Folge einer Bindung des Cignolins an die DNS diskutiert. 5. Die Wirkung des Cignolins gleicht auffallend derjenigen alkylierender Cytostatica, die ebenfalls eine Hemmung der Glykolyse ohne Beeinflussung der Atmung und eine Erniedrigung des Einbaus von Vorstufen der DNS und RNS bewirken.
