Summary 1. A comparison has been made between the chromatic threads isolated from erythrocyte nuclei and chromosomes of diploid metaphase plates of several vertebrates. A close resemblance in morphological and structural features was found. It is therefore concluded that isolated filaments are true resting stage chromosomes. 2. Measurements showed all species to possess rather similar ranges of length of isolated chromosomes, but different species differ characteristically in the frequencies of the different length groups. The mitotic chromosomes, measured on published drawings, correspond closely in length with the isolated chromosomes within a species and show the same interspecific differences.
