Notes:
A novel solid-state technique for effecting a phase shift in a light beam has been developed utilizing a voltage-controlled rf phase shifter and two acousto-optic modulators. The acousto-optic phase-shifting technique provides a simple and accurate method of phase stepping, and is a solid-state alternative to conventional mechanical piezoelectric pusher techniques. Accuracy and repeatability of the prototype system were better than 1°. The technique lends itself quite well to situations where both heterodyne and quasi-heterodyne techniques are used for interferometric analysis.
