    Notes: Approximate higher order polynomial inversion of the top-hat filter is developed with which the turbulent stress tensor in large-eddy simulation can be consistently represented using the filtered field. Generalized (mixed) similarity models are proposed which improved the agreement with the kinetic energy transfer to small scales. These similarity models are analyzed for random periodic signals and the ensemble averaged spectra of the turbulent stress tensor and the corresponding models are compared. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have grown amorphous hydrogenated boron carbide thin films on a cathode substrate by rf plasma decomposition of diborane and methane. The chemical composition, infrared absorption, optical absorption, microhardness, and adhesion of these thin films were measured. As a function of increasing diborane concentration in the feedstock, we observe increasing boron and decreasing hydrogen concentrations, increasing infrared absorption at 1300 cm−1 due to boron icosahedra, increasing optical band gaps, dramatically increased microhardness, and increased adhesion to the underlying substrates of these thin films. These results provide evidence that the presence of boron icosahedra increases microhardness, adhesion, and optical band gaps. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The equilibrium shape of internal cavities in sapphire was determined through the study of submicrometer internal cavities in single crystals. Cavities formed from indentation cracks during annealing at 1600°C. Equilibrium could be reached only for cavities that were smaller than is approximately100 nm. Excessive times were required to achieve equilibrium for cavities larger than is approximately 1μm. Five equilibrium facet planes were observed to bound the cavities: the basal (C) {0001}, rhombohedral (R) {1¯012}, prismatic (A) {12¯10}, pyramidal (P) {112¯3}, and structural rhombohedral (S) {101¯1}. The surface energies for these planes relative to the surface energy of the basal plane were γR = 1.05, γA = 1.12, γP = 1.06, γS = 1.07. These energies were compared with the most recent theoretical calculations of the surface energy of sapphire. The comparison was not within experimental scatter for any of the surfaces, with the measured relative surface energies being lower than the calculated energies. Although the prismatic (M) {101¯0} planes are predicted to be a low-energy surface, facets of this orientation were not observed.

    Notes: We have characterized the tensile creep, rupture lifetime, and cavitation behavior of a commercial, gas-pressure-sintered silicon nitride in the temperature range 1150° to 1400°C and stress range 70 to 400 MPa. Individual creep curves generally show primary, secondary, and tertiary creep. The majority of the primary creep is not recoverable. The best representation of the data is one where the creep rate depends exponentially on stress, rather than on the traditional power law. This representation also removes the need to break the data into high and low stress regimes. Cavitation of the interstitial silicate phase accompanies creep under all conditions, and accounts for nearly all of the measured strain. These observations are consistent with a model where creep proceeds by the redistribution of silicate phase from cavitating interstitial pockets, accommodated by grain-boundary sliding of silicon nitride.

    Notes: Objective To estimate more precisely the risk of fetal loss and congenital abnormalities after maternal parvovirus B19 infection, and to assess the long term outcome for surviving infants.Design Prospective cohort study of pregnant women with confirmed B19 infection with follow up of the surviving infants. The rate of fetal loss in the study cohort was compared with that in pregnant women with varicella.Setting Cases reported by laboratories in England and Wales between 1985-1988 and 1992–1995.Sample Four hundred and twenty-seven pregnant women with B19 infection and 367 surviving infants of whom 129 were followed up at 7–10 years of age.Methods Questionnaires to obstetricians and general practitioners on outcome of pregnancy and health of surviving infants. Maternal infection confirmed by B19-specific IgM assay and/or IgG seroconversion.Results The excess rate of fetal loss in women with B19 infection was confined to the first 20 weeks of gestation and averaged 9%. Seven cases of fetal hydrops followed maternal infections between 9 and 20 weeks of gestation (observed risk 2.9%, 95% CI 1.2–5.9). No abnormalities attributable to B19 infection were found at birth in surviving infants (observed risk 0%, upper 95% CI 0.86%). No late effects were found at 7–10 years.Conclusions Around 1 in 10 women infected before 20 weeks of gestation will suffer a fetal loss due to B19. The risk of an adverse outcome of pregnancy after this stage is remote. Infected women can be reassured that the maximum possible risk of a congenital abnormality due to B19 is under 1% and that long term development will be normal.

    Notes: Abstract About 300 species of thrips belonging to 57 genera are known to form galls. Galls are caused by feeding, usually by one or more adults, on actively growing plant tissue. Most thrips genera with galling capabilities exploit multiple plant families, but there are several possible cases of thrips tracking the speciations of their host-plants. Gall morphology in thrips reflects insect phylogenetic relationships rather than those of plants. Galling species and their nongalling allies on Acacia in Australia exhibit a range of complex social behavior, including soldier castes, pleometrosis (i.e. joint colony founding), group foraging, and group defense, that is directly related to the nature of their domiciles. Galling thrips, by virtue of their haplodiploid genetic system and their ecological relationships with plants and natural enemies, are useful for analyzing a wide range of ecological, evolutionary, and behavioral questions.

    Notes: Abstract Efforts to measure public health practice have taken on various forms and focused on different aspects of the system of public health practice over the past century. Before 1990, measurement was primarily based on a series of self-assessment instruments initiated under the auspices of the Committee on Administrative Practice of the American Public Health Association. These instruments emphasized measurement of immediate results of local public health services although they also provided information on local resources and capacity to perform. Following the Institute of Medicine's report in 1988, efforts began to focus on performance related to public health's core functions. These more recent assessments suggest that the system of public health practice must be improved to achieve the targets of effectiveness established for the year 2000. Ultimately, a comprehensive national surveillance system for public health practice will need to both measure and examine the relationships among inputs (resources, capacity, etc), core function-related processes, outputs (services) as well as outcomes.
