Notes: Summary Contractile responses of guinea-pig peripheral lung strips to noradrenaline were determined in the presence of propranolol (2.5 × 10−6 mol/l). All strips (n = 44) contracted to noradrenaline and a geometric mean EC50 of 1.4 × 10−6 mol/l (1.1 × 10−6 mol/l, 1.8 x 10−6 mol/l 95% confidence limits) was obtained. Contractions were antagonised by phentolamine (5 × 10−7−10−5 mol/l) and by prazosin (10∞−10−7 mol/l). Dose-ratios (DR) were calculated and log (DR-1) was plotted against log concentration of antagonist to yield slopes (± SE) of 0.84 ± 0.14 and 0.73 ± 0.22 respectively which were not significantly different from unity. A pA2 value (± SE) of 6.7 ± 0.2 was obtained for phentolamine and 7.5 ± 0.1 for prazosin. Yohimbine (10−7−10−5 mol/l) did not significantly affect the maximal tension generated or the EC50 values for noradrenaline. These results suggest that α1 adrenoceptors are mediating the contractile responses to noradrenaline. In the presence of cocaine (10−5 mol/l, n=18), normetanephrine (2 × 10−5 mol/l, n = 15), hydrocortisone (2.5 × 10−5 mol/l, n = 15) and normetanephrine (2 × 10−5-5 mol/l) plus cocaine (10−6 5 mol/l, n=15) pA2 values for phentolamine of 6.9, 6.7, 6.6, and 6.3 respectively were obtained. Since these pA2 values are not significantly different from 6.7, it is unlikely that this original pA2 value, which is lower than values obtained with phentolamine at α-adrenoceptors in other tissues, may be explained by neuronal or extraneuronal uptake of noradrenaline. A possible explanation may be that more than one population of α-adrenoceptors contribute to changes in tension in peripheral lung strips.

Notes: Summary Friedreich ataxia, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, is an autosomal recessive disease with a carrier frequency of 1/110 in the United Kingdom. The pathophysiological basis for the disease is not known and the chromosomal location of the mutation remains unidentified. As part of an attempt to map the mutation using linked DNA markers, we demonstrate that the Friedreich ataxia gene is excluded from human chromosome 19. This study also demonstrates that the insulin receptor, which maps to chromosome 19 and may be associated with abnormal biochemical features in some patients, is not the basic defect.

Notes: Abstract The case of a newborn boy with a congenital cystic neck mass causing respiratory distress is reported. This lesion extended from the submandibular region through a bone defect to the middle cranial fossa but remained totally extradural. There was no underlying brain abnormality. The cyst was composed mainly of mature neuroglial tissue, with some ependymal and choroid plexus elements, and was diagnosed as heterotopic brain. After 8 years' follow-up, the child still has no deficits.

Notes: Abstract This study retrospectively compared the success of in vitrofertilization (IVF) among patients whose gametes had been incubated either in medium supplemented with freshly prepared pooled serum (331 cases) or in pooled serum which had been stored at −20°C prior to use (728 cases). Frozen stored serum was as effective as fresh serum with regard to the proportion of oocytes which fertilized and embryos which implanted and was not associated with any increased incidence of fetal loss during postimplantation development.

Notes: Abstract Neisseria gonorrhoeae invasion of the human endometrial cell line HecIB was monitored by electron microscopy. Within six hours postinfection, the gonococci have attached to the surface of some HecIB cells and are embraced by microvilli. Gonococci subsequently enter the HecIB cells in membrane bound vessicles but by eight hours, gonococci can be seen free in the cytoplasm. At twelve hours post-infection some HecIB cells are observed containing hundreds of internalized bacteria. At twentyfour hours gonococci appear in large clusters embedded in a matrix of cellular debris, which are possibly the remains of lysed infected cells. In contrast, N. lactamica is adherent to the monolayer but noninvasive.

Notes: Abstract An article by article analysis produced by ISI has been investigated to see whether this form of feedback might be useful to the editors. The data highlight the different roles of two medical journals, which are often regarded as similar. They also allow a parallel examination of the citation pattern of other items besides the standard scientific research articles.
