Notes: In situ epitaxial growth of Bi2(Sr0.6Ca0.4)3Cu2Ox films by ion beam sputtering on cleaved MgO substrates was studied. The crystallographic structures were analyzed by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction, a four-circle x-ray diffractometer, and a scanning electron microscope. While the epitaxial films on polished MgO substrates commonly showed the fourfold symmetry, epitaxial films having twofold symmetry were grown on cleaved MgO substrates and the films contained two types of equivalently misoriented domains. The epitaxial relationship between these domains and cleaved MgO substrates was such that the b axis of each domain deviated approximately ±13° from [010]MgO where the cleavage steps ran along [100]MgO. The step edges seemed to play an important role in the occurrence of the twofold epitaxial relationship, where the incommensurate modulation tended to align its direction so as to avoid the step edges.

Notes: In order to obtain a reliable cold valve (or low temperature valve) which can be tested at room temperature, several combinations of hard material for the valve stem tip and soft material for the valve seat were tested. The combination of Be-Cu and Ag gave satisfactory performance.

Notes: We report on large in-plane anisotropic transport properties observed in epitaxial Bi2(Sr,Ca)3Cu2Ox films grown on tilted (001)SrTiO3 substrate. By tilting the surface normal axis about 4° toward [111]SrTiO3, regular steps and terraces were formed on the substrate surface and perfect alignment of film b axis with incommensurate modulation along [110]SrTiO3 was realized. The film c axis was perpendicular to the (001)SrTiO3 terrace, thus the film c axis grew tilted 4° toward [111] from surface normal due to the surface inclination. In those epitaxial configurations, the in-plane resistivity along the step direction(ρ[110]) involved the contribution from the c-axis(ρc) component, and we observed the large resistivity anisotropy between a- and b- direction of the film. The transport along a axis(ρa) showed a low resistivity with metallic temperature dependence while the resistivity along the step direction(ρ[110]) was higher and semiconductive. The ratio of ρc/ρa ≈ 104 estimated in this experiment agrees well with the anisotropy observed in the bulk single crystal.

Notes: Abstract— Fretting fatigue tests of high tensile roping steel, 1.5 mm in diameter, 1770 MPa grade, were carried out in air and seawater. S-N curves were completed in both the environments and under cathodic protection at-850 mV (SCE). The crack growth curves were determined at three different alternating stress levels. The coefficients of friction between the specimen and the fretting bridge, where the macro-slip occurred, were found to be 0.63 in air and 0.38 in seawater. The prediction of the fretting fatigue lives were made according to the Tanaka—Mutoh model, where the frictional force was taken into consideration. The predicted fatigue life agreed well with the experimental results in air but in seawater the prediction defined a much higher fatigue limit compared with the experimental results which showed the absence of the fatigue limit. These results indicate that the method of removing the electrochemical component is very promising for the prevention of fretting fatigue failure in seawater.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes a new implementation method for Boolean operations between solids with free-form surfaces. Boolean operations consist of two processes-topological modification and geometric modification-which are performed separately in our method. This separation makes the Boolean operation process simple and robust. Surfaces contained in the final solid are interpolated by the repatching facility using Gregory patches.

Notes: Summary Painting of 3,3′,4′,5-tetrachlorosalicylanilide (TCSA) plus ultraviolet A (UVA) irradiation to the same site induces contact photosensitivity (CPS), but at the same time results in death of the photohapten-modified cells. Using an in vitro immune lymph node cell (LNC) proliferation system, we investigated the mechanism of induction and elicitation of CPS by TCSA painting plus UVA irradiation. The proliferation of LNC from TCSA-photosensitized mice was not augmented by the addition of TCSA-photocoupled syngeneic spleen cells (SC) or epidermal cells (EC), whereas the picryl chloride immune LNC proliferation was activated by trinitrophenyl-coupled (TNP-coupled) SC or EC. While the viability of SC and EC was unchanged even after TNP haptenization, cells showed very low levels of viability after TCSA photohaptenization. This suggests that the inability of photoTCSA-modified cells to activate LNC proliferation is because of their low viability. Nylon wool column purified lymph node T cells from TCSA-photosensitized mice were activated by photohapten-conjugated SC or photohaptenized EC fragments only in the presence of peritoneal macrophages (MΦ). The function of live MΦ was not replaced by interleukin-1 (IL-1), suggesting that MΦ were required for processing and/or presentation of photohapten rather than simply providing IL-1. Our in vitro study implies that photoTCSA-modified cells generated in vivo require intact antigen-presenting cells to effectively induce and elicit the CPS reaction.

Notes: Summary Behavioral differences of queens of the obligately monogynous and facultatively polygynous forms ofCamponotus nawai complex were examined. Queens of the monogynous form were groomed by and received food from workers more frequently but they walked about inside nests less frequently than queens of the polygynous form. Hierarchical relationships were not observed among queens of polygynous nests. In general, those queens were equally cared for by workers, aggregated around the center of nests, and showed no hostility toward each other.
