Notes: Use of a double thyratron pulse modulator in a large-bore copper vapor laser is demonstrated. Design of the laser consisting of a discharge tube of 70-mm diameter and 1500-mm length is discussed. The laser gave 55-W output power at 4.8-kHz repetition rate using neon as the buffer gas with 9.1-kW modulator switching of electrical power. The efficiency of the laser was about 0.6%.

Notes: Cucumber mosaic virus (serologically closely related to strains CMV-C and CMV-D) is reported for the first time as a natural infection of Dianthus barbatus causing leaf crinkle and stunting of plants. It was mechanically transmitted to healthy D. barbatus and Vaccaria pyramidata (Caryophyllaceae) and to other herbaceous test plants, and was also aphid-transmissible from D. barbatus to D. barbatus. A convenient host for multiplication and purification of the virus was Nicotiana rustica. The presence of CMV was confirmed in D. barbatus and also in V. pyramidata by Western immunoblotting, but the concentration was too low in both the hosts to detect the virus by agar double diffusion tests.

Notes: Abstract A detailed study of the soil chemical and physical properties in seven-year-old alley cropping trial containingLeucaena leucocephala andFlemingia congesta in Northern Zambia is described. There was a strong correlation between the maize yield and the total amount of nitrogen applied, both from prunings and fertiliser, suggesting that a major reason for the observed benefit from alley cropping, particularly withLeucaena, was due to an improvement in nitrogen supply.Leucaena produced significantly more biomass, and its leaves had higher concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium and lower C/N and C/P ratios than did those ofFlemingia. There was also evidence that the trees had a beneficial effect on other soil chemical properties; under the hedgerows, particularly those ofLeucaena, there were higher levels of organic carbon, Mg, K and ECEC, and pH values were also highest. It is suggested that higher levels of organic carbon in the alley crop treatments were responsible for the improvements observed in soil physical properties. Lower bulk density, lower penetration resistance, and a higher infiltration rate and pore volume fraction were measured in the alley crops, although there was no significant change in the soil water release parameters. A deteriorating effect of constant applications of nitrogen fertiliser on soil fertility was observed; as the level of urea application increased, there were significant decreases in Mg, K and pH, increases in Al and soil acidity, and higher penetrometer resistance. These results highlight the urgent need for further research on biological methods of maintaining soil fertility.

Notes: Abstract Selection for high and low pupation height inDrosophila ananassae was carried out for 10 generations. Response to selection resulted in rapid divergence in pupation height in replicates of both high and low lines. There was a significant difference in mean pupation height among high, low, and control lines. Regression coefficients for both high and low lines were significantly different from zero. The realized heritability over 10 generations was 45–49 for the high lines and 26–29 for the low lines. The F1 hybrids produced by making reciprocal crosses between high and low lines showed intermediate pupation height. These findings suggest that pupation height inD. ananassae is under polygenic control, with a substantial amount of additive genetic variation.

Notes: Abstract An in vitro growth system was used to determine the virulence of two samples of Striga gesnerioides from Zakpota in southern Benin. Cowpea variety B301, previously considered resistant to all races of S. gesnerioides, was susceptible to both samples of the parasite. Two other cowpea varieties, 58–57 and IT81D-994, were totally resistant. Resistance in 58–57 was associated with a hypersensitive necrosis of infected roots, whilst IT81D-994 supported production of small S. gesnerioides tubercles with stems which failed to develop. Striga gesnerioides from southern Benin is the fourth race of the parasite to be identified, and the first with virulence on variety B301. The implications for breeding cowpeas with resistance to S. gesnerioides are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Farming systems research and extension (FSRE), as used by the global Association for Farming Systems Research-Extension, applies to a family of methodologies used to generate, evaluate and disseminate agricultural technologies in association with farmer participation. FSRE shares many attributes with Diagnosis and Design as practiced in agroforestry. The history of FSRE is traced from 1965 to the present, showing the formalization of the methodology and its critical use in sustainable agricultural technology development. In on-farm research, a primary basis for FSRE, research and extension merge in practice. The definition of recommendation domains (a fundamental concept of FSRE) is based on analysis and interpretation of multi-environmental research results as evaluated by varied criteria. In this paper, we present the results of three research projects to demonstrate the nature of farmer criteria for evaluation. Modified Stability Analysis (MSA) is used to demonstrate the relationship of on-farm research to specific extension messages. Design of on-farm research to make it amenable to analysis by MSA is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Composite flours prepared from wheat, greengram, bengalgram and blackgram flours were studied for the preparation of biscuits. Protein content of biscuits increased as the level of the pulse flours increased. Wheat flour containing bengalgram and blackgram flours adversely affected the top grain, texture and colour of biscuits. Biscuits made with higher levels of bengalgram (more than 15%) were tough and difficult to break and required higher compression force. Addition of greengram flour did not significantly affect top grain, texture and colour of biscuits. The biscuits made from 15% greengram supplemented wheat flour scored the highest for flavour characteristics. Thickness, diameter and spread ratio of biscuits containing different levels of pulse flours were significantly different from control sample. Sensory evaluation scores showed that acceptable biscuits can be prepared from wheat flour supplemented with these pulse flours at a level of 15 percent.

Notes: The effects of toluene on the kinetics of polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) initiated by the Ce(IV)/sucrose redox system were studied in the presence of an emulsifier, N-cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (NCTAB) in the temperature range 35-45°C. The effects of concentration of metal ion, monomer, sulfuric acid, substrate (sucrose), emulsifier, toluene, some inorganic salt, and organic solvent on Rp have also been investigated. The remarkable features of the investigation involve the derivation of the rate expression for the above system with the calculation of activation energy. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
