Notes: A new type of impregnated-electrode-type liquid-metal ion source, which eliminated the heating problem in the previous source, has been developed with multiple tip and reservoirs (TAR's). In the present ion source, the TAR's are connected electrically in series by modifying the TAR holding system. In order to achieve uniform heating of the TAR's, the materials of the knife-edged electrodes, which introduce the heating current to the TAR's, were examined. Tantalum electrodes exhibited better results as compared with the conventional Mo electrodes. Both of the two TAR's could be heated up to 700 °C with a heating power of 200 W. The maximum indium ion current of 9.1 mA was obtained from the four-TAR source with 40 emission points. Since the present ion current was limited by the current capacity of the extraction power supply, an ion current of more than 10 mA will be expected with a larger power supply. The results indicated that an ion current approximately proportional to the number of the emission points was obtained. This kind of ion source could be used as a general ion source in materials science.

Notes: We have carried out a detailed study of Franz–Keldysh oscillations observed in the photoreflectance spectra of molecular beam epitaxy grown GaAs/Si/GaAs and AlAs/Si/AlAs heterostructures with a Si nominal thickness of two monolayers. The oscillations in the photoreflectance spectra were due to internal electric fields generated by graded p-n junctions created by Si diffusion. The data were analyzed employing the asymptotic Franz–Keldysh theory. It is concluded that different contributions from degenerate heavy and light hole bands, to transitions around the Γ point of the Brillouin zone, must be expected for different heterostructures depending upon the particular characteristics of the internal electric fields present in the sample.

Notes: We report the successful synthesis of insulating LaSrGaO4(LSGO) thin films and YBa2Cu3O7−y(YBCO)/LSGO heteroepitaxial multilayer structures using a pulsed laser deposition technique. SrTiO3(STO)(100) was used as a substrate. The formation of highly c-axis oriented YBCO/LSGO/YBCO trilayer structures is demonstrated. Epitaxial YBCO films on LSGO//STO and LSGO/YBCO//STO have a zero resistance temperature of 88.5 and 88.3 K, respectively. Sandwich-type YBCO/LSGO/YBCO junctions were produced by a suitable patterning technique. The observed (dI/dV)-V characteristics exhibit a clear single gap structure (width ∼26 meV) at temperatures below 30 K.

Notes: Abstract A nerve-sheath myxoma beneath the dermis in the arm of a 5-year-old boy is reported. The tumor had developed on the site of chicken-pox vaccination the patient had received 2 years previously, and a foreign-body granuloma involving a nerve-fiber bundle was seen adjavent to the tumor. On the basis of previous reports, it is doubtful whether the varicella-zoster virus is tumorigenic. The present case suggests a possible relationship between the development of this tumor and factors associated with the vaccination.

Notes: Abstract Adsorption characteristics of chloroform from its aqueous solution on Na−Y and Li−Na−Y modified by SiCl4 were measured and compared with those on Na−ZSM-5 and Na-Mordenite. No adsorption occurred on Na−Y with high hydrophilicity, while the siliceous faujasites became capable of adsorption and its amount increased with increase in the Si/A1 ratio. Adsorption isotherms are of Langmuir type, suggesting that adsorption proceeds by pore filling. The adsorption amounts expressed in volume on Na−Y with high hydrophobicity corresponded to their pore volumes. Adsorption characteristics of chloroform from gaseous phase on Na−Y with different Si/A1 ratio were also measured. The adsorption capability decreased with increasing Si/A1 ratio. Immersional heats of zeolites into water or chloroform were measured in order to evaluate the surface affinity to both solvents. Immersional heats into water were almost constant (about 500 mJ·m−2) for zeolites with their Si/A1 ratio below 10. The heats decreased with an increase in the Si/A1 ratio above 10, then became almost constant (about 120 mJ·m−2) over 30 in their ratio. Heats of immersion of Na−Y series into chloroform were almost constant irrespective of their Si/A1 ratio, but decreased slightly when the ratio exceeded 20. Adsorption characteristics of chloroform could be well related to immersional heats into both solvents.

Notes: Abstract Hydrophobic faujasite-type zeolites were prepared by the treatment of hydrophilic Na-Y4.6 with silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) by way of dealumination-silicon exchange reaction. Hydrophilic-hydrophobic characters of these zeolite surfaces were evaluated by measurements of immersional heats into water orn-hexane. Adsorption rates of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDoS) on these zeolites from its aqueous solution and their adsorption characteristics were investigated, and compared with those on ZSM-5 with various Si/Al ratios. The adsorption ability of SDoS into zeolite micropores developed on the zeolite only when it was modified to some extent. The adsorption rates of SDoS were very slow and proved to be affected by molecular diffusion in zeolite pores. They depended on hydrophilic-hydrophobic character of zeolites as well as on pore structures. Adsorption isotherms of SDoS were of Langmuir type, which indicates that the adsorption occurred typically into zeolite pores. Adsorbed amount of SDoS depended on the balance of hydrophilic-hydrophobic character and number of cation site of zeolite surfaces, and had a maximum in case of ZSM-5 zeolites.

Notes: Abstract Transient response curves for exposure to several gases are observed using zinc oxide (ZnO) thin-film gas sensors. It is found that an aluminium-doped ZnO (ZnO∶:Al) sensor exhibits a high sensitivity and an excellent selectivity for amine gases. In order to discriminate between gas species such as trimethylamine (TMA), dimethylamine (DMA) and other gases pattern recognition analysis using a neural network is carried out using parameters which characterize the transient responses of the sensor for exposure to gases. The recognition probability of the neural network is 90% for TMA and DMA with constant concentration and is 100% for TMA and DMA with different concentrations, except for a concentration of 1 p.p.m.
