Notes: Photothermal deflection spectroscopy has been applied to optical absorption measurements in As2S3, Se, and As–S glasses. The spectroscopic method is demonstrated to be suitable for evaluation of small absorption in thin samples, while its accuracy is affected by light scattering. For As2S3, as-evaporated films give higher residual absorption than those of the bulk. In the As–S system, As2S3 shows the most prominent weak absorption tail, and As17S83 exhibits a peculiar spectrum. The origins of these features are discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: 100 TW light from the Petawatt Module (PWM) laser illuminated a preimploded spherical deuterated polystyrene(CD) shell target. The DD neutron yield increased from 2.5×105–106. Analysis indicates that hundreds of keV deuterons, generated around the critical density, collide with cold fuel deuterons and play the leading role in the enhancement of the neutron yield. A two-dimensional particle-in-cell (2D PIC) simulation predicted well the deuteron spectrum. A 60 TW laser was used for MeV proton emissions and megagauss magnetic fields generation on the rear surface of a Poly p-xylene(C8H8) plane target. The 2D PIC simulation explained well the results. The PWM laser was upgraded to one PW, making it the world biggest Petawatt laser (PW laser). An optically parametric chirped amplification was introduced in the front end. The pulse was synchronized to the GEKKO XII imploding beams to within 10 ps. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Under the action of an intense laser and strong magnetic field, an electron undergoes oscillation at a cyclotron frequency, as well as the frequency of the incident wave. The coupling between the drift cyclotron and figure-8 motions can generate sidebands in the vicinity of all harmonics. The frequency separation between the sidebands could be used to infer the magnitude of the self-generated magnetic field.© 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The crack propagation law was derived from the S–N data in the very high cycle fatigue of a bearing steel. The propagation rate, da/dN (m/cycle), of surface cracks was estimated to be a power function of the stress intensity range, ΔK (MPa√m) with the coefficient Cs = 5.87 × 10−13 and the exponent ms = 4.78. The threshold stress intensity range was 2.6 MPa√m. The crack propagation from internal inclusions was divided into Stages I and II. For Stage I, the coefficient of the power law was C0 = 3.44 × 10−21 and the exponent m0 = 14.2. The transition from Stage I to II took place at ΔK = 4.0 MPa√m. For Stage II, the coefficient was Ci = 2.08 × 10−14 and the exponent mi = 4.78. The specimen size and loading mode did not influence the surface fatigue life, while the internal fatigue life was shortened in larger specimens and under tension–compression loading. For ground specimens, the surface fatigue life was raised by the compressive residual stress, while reduced by the surface roughness introduced by grinding. For shot-peened specimens, fatigue fracture did not take place from the surface because of a high surface compressive residual stress. The internal fatigue life was reduced by the tensile residual stress existing in the interior of the specimens.

Notes: Fatigue strength assessment methods are applied to practical arc-welded structural features that have complex three-dimensional geometry. Two methods are investigated in the present research. The criterion of the first method is cyclic plastic zone size, which is calculated from stress singularity parameters. The criterion of the second method is hot spot stress. These fatigue strength criteria are proved to be applicable to the fatigue strength assessment of practical arc-welded structural features. These criteria enable a critical point at which fatigue cracks are most likely to initiate to be specified for each type of welded joint and load. Consequently, the critical point simplifies the classification of various welded joints. Furthermore, a fatigue strength computer-aided engineering system, which includes functional engines for the evaluation of the fatigue strength of a designed shape, is proposed.

Notes: Summary Background Patients with atopic dermatitis show a tendency for vasoconstriction of the small vessels in the skin. As peripheral vasoconstriction contributes to the cause of hypertension, it is natural to suppose that blood pressures might be on the high side in adult patients with atopic dermatitis. In the literature, however, there was little information on the subject. Objectives To study the incidence of hypertension in adult patients with atopic dermatitis. Patients/methods Blood pressure was measured in 521 adult patients with active atopic dermatitis (235 males; 286 females) aged 30–59 years, and 87 adults with ‘healed’ atopic dermatitis (26 males; 61 females) aged 34–52 years. The blood pressures were classified as definite hypertension, borderline hypertension or normal blood pressure. Results In those patients aged 30–39 years with active atopic dermatitis, the incidence of definite hypertension in the male patients and the female patients was 1·1% and 1·6%, respectively. The incidence remained almost at a plateau for the 30–39-year-old age group through to the 50–59-year-old age group, in both the male and female patients. There was no difference in the incidence of definite hypertension between patients with severe dermatitis and patients with mild dermatitis. Adult patients with ‘healed’ atopic dermatitis also showed a low incidence of definite hypertension. Conclusions These findings indicate that hypertension is rare in adult patients with atopic dermatitis. It is most probable that the rarity of hypertension is a primary feature of the disease.

Notes: [Auszug] Rapid heating of a compressed fusion fuel by a short-duration laser pulse is a promising route to generating energy by nuclear fusion, and has been demonstrated on an experimental scale using a novel fast-ignitor geometry. Here we describe a refinement of this system in which a much more ...
