Notes: Summary To obtain more accurate information on the prevalence of stage A prostatic cancer (incidental or latent carcinoma), a prospective collaborative study was set up in Japan and the Netherlands. A total of 859 specimens were submitted for routine histological examination (Japan: 343 specimens; the Netherlands: 516 specimens). All specimens were obtained from patients more than 50 years of age showing clinical signs of obstructive benign prostatic disease. The overall prevalence of stage A cancer in both countries was almost equal (Japan 13% vs the Netherlands 14%). A relatively large number of incidental tumors were found in subcapsular prostatectomy specimens in the Netherlands. Increasing prevalence of stage A disease in subsequent age decades was not found in the Netherlands, where the highest prevalence was observed in the 70–79 age-group. Subdivision of stage A disease into A1 and A2 tumors did not reveal any significant difference in prevalence between the two countries. Of particular interest is that the number of A2 lesions found in the Netherlands was not higher than that found in Japan. In both countries almost all A1 lesions were identified as G1 tumors in stage A1 disease. Both G2 and G3 lesions were present in Japan and the Netherlands in 79% and 72% of the A2 cases respectively. Results are discussed and especially related to their possible impact upon the differences in mortality rate between the two countries.

Notes: Summary Plasminogen activator was recovered from bladder tumors by 30% ammonium sulfate precipitation, acid treatment and concanavalin A-Sepharose affinity chromatography to a purification factor of about 80,000. The pooled fraction from the binding protein to concanavalin A-Sepharose revealed a single enzymatically active band with molecular weight of 55,000, which lost its enzymatic activity in the absence of plasminogen. The enzymatic activity was inactivated by DFP. The purified plasminogen activator reacted with antibody against UK, and not with that against t-PA. The purified plasminogen activator cleaved S-2288 to a greater extent than S-2444, although UK cleaved S-2444 to a greater extent that S-2288. The enzymatic activity was strongly inhibited by basic pancreatic trypsin inhibitor, and benzamidine. These results suggest that the plasminogen activator in bladder tumors may belong to a different category of plasminogen activator.

Notes: Summary To investigate the effect of anti-androgens on BPH, Oxendolone (OXD), a pure anti-androgen, was tested in experimentally induced BPH in 17 beagle dogs, alone or in combination with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) which displays both anti-androgenic and anti-estrogenic activity. The relatively early stage of canine BPH was induced by administration of 3α-androstanediol (3α-A) plus estradiol (E2) for 6 months and followed by testosterone propionate (TP) plus E2 for another 6 months during the anti-androgenic treatment. By the manipulation with T, a decrease in volume of glandular component associated with a relative increase in stromal tissue was achieved, which mimics human BPH histology. The prostate substituted with T and E2, however, gradually decreased in size. Therefore the effect of OXD or OXD+MPA was not significant agianst the untreated controls (T-E control). The weight of the prostate in these OXD±MPA groups was however significantly reduced as compared to that of BPH controls which received 3α-A and E2 throughout the experimental period. On histological examination, atrophic changes were observed in the hormone-treated groups compared to the T-E control. The finding was the most striking in the OXD+MPA group with small non-involuted acini scattered in the abundant stromal tissue. This was almost identical to the appearances of castrated control groups. Atrophy may be due not only to the anti-androgenic but also to the anti-estrogenic property of MPA. A report on the hormonal background of this experiment will appear in the second article.

Notes: Summary A print immunofixation is a very useful procedure for the demonstration of α2HS-glycoprotein (HSGA) following polyacrylamide gel isoelectric focusing. However, this technique has the one disadvantage of requiring a large volume of expensive antiserum. In this paper an alternative detection system is presented which involves the non-electric transfer of HSGA from a focused gel to a nitrocellulose filter and the immunologic detection of HSGA immobilized on nitrocellulose. Using this method the distribution of HSGA polymorphism in the Nepalese and Japanese populations was investigated. All the populations tested were found to lack the common HSGA *3 of the Caucasians. A rare HSGA *5 in Honshu, a main island of Japan, was observed at polymorphic frequency in Okinawa, Southern Japan.

Notes: Summary A new rare genetic variant PI Poki in the protease inhibitor system found in two Japanese subjects, was compared with some PI P variants using several electrophoresis systems. Although this variant was slightly anodal to P by separator isoelectric focusing, it could be readily distinguished by isoelectric focusing with immobilized pH gradients: the mobility of Poki became cathodal to P. This method proved to be a powerful tool for identification of PI variants.

Notes: Summary The occurrence of natural triploid hybrids between tetraploid Solanum acauleBitter subsp. acaule and diploid S. infundibuliformePhilippi both tuber-bearing Solanums, in the Puna region of Jujuy, is reported. The natural hybrids, which are morphologically intermediate between their putative parents and completely male sterile, have a somatic chromosome number of 36. The artificial hybrids, obtained by crossing both parental species, closely resemble the natural ones thereby confirming their parentage. It is proposed to designate the natural hybrids Solanum x viirsooi hybr. nov.

Notes: Summary To determine whether sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Poir.) takes up organic matter through the roots from the medium, the concentrations of natural14C (δ14C) in plant organic matter, atmospheric CO2 and compost applied to media were examined under soil and sand culture conditions. In these experiments, three kinds of composts of different δ14C were used. CO2 derived from the mineralization of compost was continuously pumped out from the pots and its direct uptake by the leaves was prevented. δ14C of plant parts harvested after the 43 days experimental period were affected by the δ14C of the compost in the treatments where the compost of rice straw was applied, and which suggested that a significant amount of plant carbon was derived from the compost.
