Description / Table of Contents: Summary Binocular depth inversion represents an illusion of visual perception. Such inversion does not occur in all cases, especially when objects with a higher degree of familiarity (e.g. photographs of faces) are displayed. Cognitive factors are assumed to override the binocular disparity cues of stereopsis. We tested the hypothesis that during sleep deprivation the human CNS is unable to correct the implausible perceptual information. Measurements of binocular depth inversion in perception of 3D objects were taken in sleep-deprived medical staff and healthy volunteers. The binocular depth inversion scores were highly elevated in the sleep-deprived group in comparison to the healthy volunteers. The data demonstrate a strong impairment of binocular depth inversion after sleep deprivation and support the view that sleep deprivation may be accompanied by a disorganisation of the interaction between sensory input and generation of perceptual hypotheses.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract This paper mainly describes the following three methods of quantitative analysis of diffusion processes in ore minerals with the electron micro probe: 1. Spot analysis, whereby the electron probe is fixed on the questionable specimen part for a long time. 2. Line scanning along a distinct traverse of the specimen. 3. X-ray-scanning-picture method, which allows the photographic identification of very small chemical concentration differences in the specimen. Further, the main sources of error and the different constants of analysis, which influence the X-ray-pulse-rate, are listed.

Notes: Summary The Gulf of Mexico (GOM) circulation is simulated using the DieCAST ocean model, with a horizontal resolution of 1/12° and 20 vertical layers. The results compare well with observations of both large and small scale features, including Loop Current frontal occlusions associated with frontal eddies. The simulation is carried out without any data assimilation. The frontal eddies tend to be spaced at about 90° intervals around the Loop Current, leading to a Loop Current head shaped like a square with rounded corners. The pattern rotates as the eddies circle the Loop, and frontal eddies elongate as they squeeze through the Florida Strait. Major warm core eddies separate regularly from the Loop Current and propagate to the western GOM. Old warm core eddies in the western Gulf dissipate through bottom drag effects, which also generate cyclonic parasitic eddies. Newly arrived warm core eddies merge with old ones in the western GOM. Recently separated elongated Loop Current eddies can rotate and reattach temporarily to the Loop Current. The barotropic flow component develops eddies between the main separated warm core eddy and the Loop Current due to eastward dispersion, as the main eddy itself propagates westward into the Gulf.

Notes: Abstract. The 96-h toxicity of four organophosphates (thiometon, disulfoton, malathion, and demeton-S-methyl, the oxygen analogue of thiometon) in the freshwater bivalve mollusc Dreissena polymorpha was tested using different nominal concentrations ranging between 6 and 50 mg/L. No mortalities were observed in mussels exposed to malathion and demeton-S-methyl (26 mg/L and 6 mg/L, respectively), and at the lowest concentrations of thiometon and disulfoton (6 and 10 mg/L, respectively). At higher thiometon and disulfoton concentrations, mortalities occurred. At the highest concentrations of 50 mg thiometon/L and 30 mg disulfoton/L, mussel mortalities of 88 and 93%, respectively, were determined. Organophosphate concentrations of up to a factor 10 times higher than in the ambient water were found in exposed mussels, irrespective of whether they were alive or dead. The search for organophosphate metabolites via GC/MS analysis of mussel tissue extracts was negative, suggesting lacking or low oxidative activation of the insecticides used. The mollusc is highly resistant to toxic effects of organophosphate insecticides and their biological active oxygen analogues.

Notes: Abstract The death of buzzards (Buteo buteo) found in fodder and sugar beet fields treated with granular carbofuran was investigated. To determine if there was a causal relationship between carbofuran treatment and bird mortality, earthworms of a specific fodder beet field as well as the crop contents of dead buzzards were analyzed for carbofuran contamination. Earthworms of the fodder beet field contained carbofuran concentrations up to 3.2 mg/kg, while remains of earthworms and carbofuran were detected in all buzzard crop contents. The carbofuran concentrations found in the earthworms as well as in the crops of the buzzards corroborate the suspicion that the buzzards found on fodder and sugar beet fields treated with granular carbofuran had died of secondary poisoning with carbofuran via contaminated earthworms.
