    Notes: A Stern–Gerlach atomic-beam ion source (ABS) with an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ionizer and a Cs gas target as charge exchange units will replace the Munich Lamb–Shift polarized hydrogen source. The goal is to achieve intense negative beams of polarized H− and D− of high brightness for injection into the 14 MV MP tandem accelerator and beam intensity of about 2 μA on the target. At the entrance of the ECR ionizer the observed intensity of the neutral beam of polarized atoms is 6.4±0.4×1016 H/s, equivalent to 10 particle/mA before ionization. Comparing beam transport calculations with beam intensity measurements under various conditions allows a consistent description of the beam formation in the ABS with respect to the degree of dissociation ((similar, equals)80%), peaking ((similar, equals)1.6), beam absorption ((similar, equals)40%), and pumping speeds to be made. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A cold working steel was coated both with high temperature CVD (TiN) and moderate temperature CVD (Ti[C,N]). AES depth profiles show a significant difference at the interface, where a thin oxide layer remains detectable at deposition temperatures of 750 °C. It could be shown that an impedance signal at a frequency of 13 MHz is well suited to detect the early stages of the growth of a CVD coating.

    Notes: Abstract The Onega plateau constitutes part of a vast continental flood basalt province in the SE Baltic Shield. It consists of Jatulian-Ludikovian submarine volcanic, volcaniclastic and sedimentary sequences attaining in places 4.5 km in thickness. The parental magmas of the lavas contained ∼10% MgO and were derived from melts generated in the garnet stability field at depths 80–100 km. The Sm-Nd mineral and Pb-Pb whole-rock isochron ages of 1975 ± 24 and 1980 ± 57 Ma for the upper part of the plateau and a SHRIMP U-Pb zircon age of 1976 ± 9 Ma for its lower part imply the formation of the entire sequence within a short time span. These ages coincide with those of picrites in the Pechenga-Imandra belt (the Kola Peninsula) and komatiites and basalts in the Karasjok-Kittilä belt (Norway and Finnmark). Together with lithostratigraphic, chemical and isotope evidence, these ages suggest the derivation of the three provinces from a single large (∼2000 km in diameter) mantle plume. These plume-generated magmas covered ∼600,000 km2 of the Baltic Shield and represent a major contribution of juvenile material to the existing continental crust at 2.0 Ga. The uppermost Onega plateau lavas have high (Nb/Th)N = 1.4–2.4, (Nb/La)N= 1.1–1.3, positive ɛNd(T) of +3.2 and unradiogenic Pb-isotope composition (μ1 = 8.57), comparable with those of modern oceanic plume-derived magmas (oceanic flood basalt and ocean island basalt). These parameters are regarded as source characteristics. The lower sequences have (Nb/Th)N= 0.58–1.2, (Nb/La)N= 0.52–0.88 and ɛNd(T) =−2.6. They have experienced mixing with 10–30% of continental crust and resemble contaminated lavas from other continental flood basalt provinces. The estimated Nb/U ratios of 53 ± 4 in the uncontaminated rocks are similar to those found in the modern mantle (∼47) suggesting that by 2.0 Ga a volume of continental crust similar to the present-day value already existed.

    Notes: Abstract The Drosophila genes Pig-1 and Sgs-4 are adjacent and oppositely transcribed genes which share a common enhancer region located in the intergenic region between the two transcription start sites. Both genes are transcribed in the same tissue, the larval salivary gland, but they are expressed at different times, the expression switching from Pig-1 to Sgs-4 expression during development of the third-instar larva. Here we describe partial purification and functional analysis of a DNA-binding protein, secretion enhancer binding protein 1 (SEBP1), from nuclear extracts of whole Drosophila larvae. SEBP1 binds to a single site within the Pig-1/Sgs-4 intergenic region. Point mutations that disrupt this site had no significant effect on activation of the Sgs-4 promoter in constructs lacking the Pig-1 promoter. However, if the Pig-1 promoter was present, the same mutations led to a strong attenuation of Sgs-4 promoter activity, suggesting that binding of SEBP1 is necessary for the Pig-1/Sgs-4 transcriptional switch. The data are consistent with a model in which the SEBP1 binding site acts as a transient silencing element that facilitates the reorganization of promoter-enhancer interactions by disrupting pre-existing interactions, thus enabling stage-specific activators of Sgs-4 to bind to their enhancer target sites.
