Notes: Excited carrier dynamics in GaAs and Al0.2Ga0.8As are investigated using femtosecond pump and continuum probe techniques. We observe absorption spectral hole burning arising from excited carriers generated by transitions from the split-off band as well as the heavy- and light-hole bands. Transient absorption saturation measurements indicate that the initial nonthermal carrier distribution thermalizes on a time scale of several tens of femtoseconds.

Notes: Femtosecond transient absorption saturation measurements are used to investigate the scattering of optically excited carriers in AlGaAs. With pulses as short as 35 fs at 1.98 eV, scattering times ranging from 13 to 330 fs are observed in samples of AlxGa1−xAs with x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. A dramatic decrease in the rate of carrier scattering out of the initial optically excited states is observed with increasing Al concentration.

Notes: Abstract The complex mechanisms by which nonlinear classical conservative systems undergo a transition from quasiperiodic to chaotic behavior are now fairly well understood. This transition is associated with a breakdown of quasi-constants of motion (KAM surfaces). There is growing evidence that similar mechanisms may govern the behavior of quantum systems. While K-type mixing behavior has not yet been found, there does appear to be a transition associated with the destruction of a quantum quasi-constant of motion (quantum KAM states) which changes qualitatively the spectrum of quantum systems.

Notes: Abstract Plantlets were regenerated from Alstroemeria ‘Alsaan’ rhizome tips cultured in vitro on solid and liquid media based on Murashige and Skoog salt formulation. The quality of the cultures was superior when intact rather than longitudinally sliced rhizome tips were used as explants and when a temperature of 8°C rather than 22°C was used at the initiation stage. More roots were produced on rhizome tips containing a rhizome apical meristem than on rhizome sections lacking such a meristem. Most (90%) of the rooted plantlets were successfully acclimatized and developed into true-to-type flowering plants.

Notes: Abstract A vertical, planar pressurized crack is located in a layer with fixed upper and lower surfaces. The integral representation for the displacement field is given, and an integral equation, which relates crack opening and applied pressure, is derived. A numerical scheme to construct the triangular boundary elements and to solve the integral equation is developed. A three-term approximative integration scheme developed by Sneddon proves to be essential for implementation of the numerical solution. Numerical examples are designed for exploring the boundary effect once the kernel of the integral is put into a suitable form. Simplifying methods to approximate the results of the exact solution are developed and prove surprisingly accurate.
