Notes: Spin-dependent absorption spectroscopy with circularly polarized synchrotron radiation is presented as a new method to study magnetism in magnetic solids. In the near-edge absorption region, the spin-dependent absorption coefficient probes the spin density of unoccupied states of selected angular momentum at the absorber atom. The spin-dependent absorption effects as function of temperature contain information on the local magnetic coupling. A large spin-dependent part of the absorption of ∼+0.22 at the Pt L2 edges in PtFe is observed in transmission and fluorescence mode.

Notes: Abstract An optimization strategy is presented for optimizing the structure of empirical thermodynamic correlation equations. Based on a comprehensive functional expression for the physical dependence considered, which is called a “bank of terms,” the new procedure optimizes the structure and the length of the equation as well. The application of this method results in an equation which meets the quality wanted for representing the experimental data with the lowest number of fitted coefficients. The procedure can be used for the determination of the structure of any equation where the method of the linear least squares is applicable. A detailed description of the algorithm is given which includes values for the control parameters for different applications in the field of thermodynamics (vapor pressure equations, equations of state, etc.) and also for applications in other fields. The optimization steps are described using an equation which represents a relationship between variables in a general form. It is demonstrated how even the complex problem of the optimization of a fundamental equation for the Heimholtz energy can be written in terms of this general equation.

Notes: Summary In the present paper the theoretical and numerical treatment of static stability problems is discussed. For the structural stability behaviour path-following methods, strategies for detecting stability points and branch-switching procedures are investigated. Stability problems due to material damaging are treated with Gurson's model for the description of void growth in the context of plastic behaviour. For the stress update analysis a return mapping algorithm is used.

Notes: Abstract Large spin-dependent absorption effects have been observed with circularly polarized photons of energies between 10.8 keV and 13.8 keV at theL 2,3-edges of Os, Ir, Pt, and Au impurities (3 at.%) in iron. The largest value of the spin-dependent absorption coefficient (µ c /µ o ∼+0.22) is found at the PtL 2-edge. From the energy dependence of the spin-dependent absorption at theL 2- andL 3-edges the spin-density profiles of thed 3/2-andd 5/2-projected states populated in the absorption process are derived. Thed 5/2-spin densities deduced from theL 3 spin-dependent absorption spectra agree well with spin-polarized band-structure calculations for the ferromagnetic ground state. A comparison of thed 3/2- andd 5/2-spin densities shows a strong contribution of the spin-orbit effects to the exchange splitting in Os, whereas only small spin-orbit effects are indicated for Ir, Pt and Au impurities.

Notes: Summary The hydrogen concentration, C(H), of oxidic thin films (SiO2, WO3, Ta2O5, TiO2, ITO) produced by reactive evaporation has been determined by means of nuclear reaction analysis. For comparison Ta2O5 layers deposited by reactive ion plating were investigated. The results show differences in the time-dependent behaviour of the H uptake for various single film materials and layer combinations. For single layers the kinetics for the hydrogen absorption is as follows: WO3 〉 Ta2O5 〉 SiO2 〉 ITO. An appreciable amount of hydrogen-containing species is found only in the layers created by evaporation.
