    Notes: Influence of a thin protective but subsequently evaporated InAs layer on the regrowth of AlGaAs has been studied. It was found that although most of the InAs could be evaporated by thermal desorption, some would react with Al0.36Ga0.64As to form InAlGaAs. These InAlGaAs islands act as potential wells for carrier recombination and dominate the photoluminescence spectrum. Transmission electron microscopy photographs show that dislocations are formed near the islands. These defects are caused by lattice mismatch between AlGaAs and InAlGaAs. These islands and defects strongly affect the optical quality of surrounding Al0.36Ga0.64As and quantum wells.

    Notes: Direct observation of the Si delta-doped layer in GaAs has been achieved by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Samples with different Si doses, from half a monolayer to two monolayers, were studied. The observed spreading of the delta-doped layer showed that Si atoms are largely confined in five monolayers at most (in the highest dose case), indicating excellent confinements of dopants in GaAs. From the images, the Si atoms were uniformly distributed in the doped layer, no cluster formation was observed. For delta-doped GaAs grown at low temperature (480 °C), stacking faults originated from the doped layers were observed. These faults were thought to be caused by the large unrelaxed strain in the low-temperature grown GaAs.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of solid particles on the flow structure of axisymmetric turbulent coaxial jets has been studied. A laser-Doppler anemometer was used to measure the mean and fluctuation velocities of both phases, and a Malvern laser diffraction instrument was applied to measure particle size and concentration. A series of velocity ratios and particle loading ratios were investigated, and the results were analysed for the effects of these ratios on the mixing characteristic and the similarity behavior of the jet. The effects of particle diameter and its distribution were also studied as well as their influence on the coaxial jet behavior.

    Notes: Abstract Particle concentration and particle size distribution curves have been measured for particle-laden jets of silica gel powder for different loading ratios and air velocities using a Laser Diffraction Method (LDM) and a tomography data transform technique. It was found that the mean particle size at the outer edge of the jet decreases with increasing gas velocity, and that the jet widens with decreasing particle concentration and increasing gas velocity.

    Notes: Abstract An object with a compact core is a configuration in various astrophysical problems. In this paper, considering general relativity, the number densities of stars in a spherically-symmetric system containing a massive black hole in its center has been obtained forv=4/3,5/3, and the non-relativistic case. The results obtained by Peebles (1972), Bahcall and Wolf (1976), and that obtained for an isothermal sphere case are discussed. Taking into account the stability of the system, it is found to be more rational to usen(r) ∼r −7/4 to express the number density of stars when they are near the massive central black hole.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we introduce the CM field in Sections 2 and 3 based on the paper by Wang and Peng (1985), and calculate the light curved in the CM field in Section 4. The result shows thatP makes ΔφCM larger than ΔφC at $$\theta \in (\cos ^{ - 1} \tfrac{1}{3},\pi - \cos ^{ - 1} \tfrac{1}{3})$$ , and smaller at $$\theta \in (\theta ,\cos ^{ - 1} \tfrac{1}{3}) \cup (\pi - \cos ^{ - 3} \tfrac{1}{3},\pi )$$ . Under a special circumstance which source, CM lens, and observer are in the same line, if we get Δφ| 0=0 , $$\Delta \phi |_{\theta = \cos ^{ - 1} } 1/3$$ and Δφ| θ=π/2 , we can determine theP(M) andQ(M) of the CM lens,M is the mass of the CM lens.

    Notes: A free radical copolymerization model is proposed for simulating the reaction rates and conversions of styrene monomer and unsaturated polyester resins during curing. This model is based on film theory in which the rate constants reflect both reaction and diffusion resistances. Differential scanning calorimetry in combination with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to measure the overall and individual reactivities of reacting species. Model parameters are determined from experimental data. The applicability of this model is demonstrated in a cure simulation.
