    Notes: Here we report on the precise structural investigation of multiwalled boron nitride (BN) nanotubes by means of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. The nanotubes were produced from carbon nanotubes by applying a recently discovered technique: a substitution chemical reaction [W. Han, Y. Bando, K. Kurashima, and T. Sato, Appl. Phys. Lett. 73, 3085 (1998)]. It is found that in contrast to the starting carbon nanotubes, which exhibited large number of shells (typically 〉10), a significant proportion of buckled and corrugated graphene-like sheets, poor degree of graphitization, and wide distribution of helicities, the resultant BN nanotubes revealed perfectly straight shapes, limited number of shells (typically 2–6), and remarkable ordering of the graphene-like sheets in the so-called nonhelical "zig-zag" fashion with the [101¯0] direction parallel to the tube axis. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Linear and nonlinear particle-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation codes are developed to study interactions between energetic ions and MHD modes. Energetic alpha particles with the slowing-down distribution are considered and the behavior of n=2 toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAE modes) is investigated with the parameters pertinent to the present large tokamaks. The linear simulation reveals the resonance condition between alpha particles and TAE mode. In the nonlinear simulation, two n=2 TAE modes are destabilized and alpha particle losses induced thereby are observed. Counterpassing particles are lost when they cross the passing-trapped boundary. They are the major part of lost particles, but trapped particles are also lost appreciably. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Formation of a magnetic island found in the Magnetic Reconnection Experiment (MRX) [M. Yamada, H. Ji, S. Hsu, et al., Phys. Plasmas 4, 1936 (1997)] is investigated by a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) relaxation theory and a numerical simulation. In the cohelicity injection with a mean toroidal field, the growing process of the island into a spheromak-type configuration is explained by quasistatic transition of the force-free and minimum energy state to a state with larger normalized helicity. It also turns out that no magnetic island would be generated in the counterhelicity case. The MHD simulation with inhomogeneous electric resistivity agrees with experimental results, which clearly shows formation and growth of the magnetic island in a diffusion region where the reconnection takes place. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: New applications of high resistivity magnetic films, such as Fe–Hf–O and Co–Fe–Hf–O as thin film inductors and flux gate magnetic sensors, were investigated. These soft magnetic films with nanocrystalline structure and high resistivity were deposited on glass substrate by using the oxygen reactive sputtering method. Planar sandwich thin film inductors developed by using Fe–Hf–O or Co–Fe–Hf–O films had a higher quality factor than that of an amorphous Co–Ta–Hf film inductor. The dc–dc converter using the Fe(Co–Fe)–Hf–O film inductor had higher conversion efficiency. These high resistivity magnetic films were also applied to a flux gate magnetic sensor operated at high frequencies over 1 MHz. Both high frequency excitation and high permeability (owing to the low eddy current loss) enabled us to increase the sensitivity, e.g., 39 mV/Oe/turn at 5 MHz when using a 3 μm thick Fe–Hf–O film (12×6 mm2 area). © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The stability constants for the inclusion of fragrance materials with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (2HP-β-C yD) in aqueous solution have been determined by the static head-space method. The 1:1 stability constants obtained by this method were in reasonable agreement with the corresponding values in the literature. In addition, the release profiles of fragrance materials from 2HP-β-CyD aqueous solution were investigated using the dynamic head-space method. It was found that the suppression of the fragrance materials release was dependent on their stability constants.

    Notes: Time-resolved photoluminescence has been measured on molecular beam epitaxy grown Cd1−xMnxTe epilayer samples. The photoluminescence intensity of magnetic polarons exhibits a very long emission tail. The observed phenomenon is attributed to the conversion of the dark excitons to dipole allowed transitions by a spin-flip process. The magnetic field dependence of the two-exponential decay property is discussed within the frame of giant Zeeman splitting, the spin-flip scattering, and the formation of the magnetic polarons. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The pressure within latex balloons remains constant despite the balloons being inflated to more than 40 times their initial volume. We used this property to enable improved tracheal cuff pressure control. A latex balloon with an initial volume of 5 ml was connected via a vinyl duct attached with a roller clamp and three-way stopcock to a standard tracheal tube cuff. The 5 ml latex balloon was then inflated with 250 ml of air. The pressure within the tracheal tube cuff was monitored throughout anaesthesia with the inflated latex balloon acting as a pressure controller. Throat symptoms were recorded on the first four postoperative days. The controller kept the tracheal tube cuff pressures constant, and reduced the incidence of postoperative throat symptoms. Variations in cuff pressures with and without the controller were investigated in an altitude chamber to simulate flight. In the altitude chamber, cuff pressure reached over 200 cmH2O at 10 000 feet without the controller, whereas such variations were practically eliminated when the controller was used.

    Notes: The magnetic behavior of a typical diluted magnetic semiconductor Cd0.63Mn0.37Te was investigated under the unpolarized light illumination in a magnetic field. Both the zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) values of magnetization in Cd0.63Mn0.37Te decrease under illumination below the spin freezing temperature. This magnetic response was explained on the basis of a change in temperature of the sample under illumination, since the intrinsic photo-induced magnetic change was less than the resolution of superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer. The transient behavior observed in the FC and ZFC values of magnetization in Cd0.63Mn0.37Te was analyzed in terms of the step-like heating and cooling induced by the optical method and it was observed that the FC magnetization showed hardly any relaxation in spite of the change in temperature below the spin freezing temperature. In addition, the analysis of ZFC magnetization indicated that two types of spins coexist in the low temperature state of Cd0.63Mn0.37Te: one belongs to the freezing spin cluster and the other shows paramagnetic behavior. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
