Notes: Void shape changes induced by electromigration pose reliability problems in Al-based interconnects. Recent observations have shown that a rounded void sometimes collapses to a transverse slit in an interconnect with bamboo-like grain structure. This article provides a linear stability analysis for a circular void that is only partially conductive in an otherwise infinite conductive medium. The relation between the inner conductivity (i.e., the conductivity of the medium in the void) and the critical remote electric field intensity, Ecr, for the linear stability of the void is established. It is proven that when the inner conductivity becomes zero, Ecr goes to infinity, and we can look upon the inner conductivity of a vacuum void as zero. That is why the vacuum circular void is linearly stable. It is also shown that when the inner conductivity is very small, the stability of a void is sensitive to it. From the computational results, we know that if the inner conductivity is 0.1% of that outside the void, the Ecr is only twenty times of that for the dislocation loop case. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ultrafast phase dynamics of free-induction decay for carriers in bulk GaAs is studied with differential-phase spectroscopy. The instantaneous phase shifts of the free-induction decay with respect to the excitation pulses are extracted from simultaneously recorded laser pulse autocorrelation and free-induction decay in GaAs. Ultrafast phase dynamics during and immediately after the femtosecond pulse excitation are numerically evaluated with optical Bloch equations using pump pulse and semiconductor exciton parameters as input. Good agreement of the theory with experiment is obtained. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

In the crystal structure of (1) an alternate crisscross arrangement of urea ribbons, which are cross-bridged by other urea molecules, water molecules and fluoride ions, generates a three-dimensional host lattice containing an open-channel system running parallel to the b axis, with the (n-C3H7)4N+ cations accommodated in a zigzag column within each channel. In the crystal structure of (2) the cations are sandwiched between puckered layers resulting from parallel urea ribbons that are cross-bridged by chloride anions. In (3) the (n-C3H7)4N+ cations are accommodated in a channel-type host lattice built of planar arrays of twisted ribbons constructed from three independent urea molecules, which are cross-linked by bridging chloride ions. Complexes (4) and (5) are isomorphous with the same channel host framework built of parallel corrugated urea layers that are interlinked by cyclic (H2O.X−)2 tetramers.

Notes: Abstract Both the off-diagonal Seebeck effect and the off-diagonal Peltier effect were investigated on the same textured sample YBa2Cu3O7−δ and with the use of the same experimental setup. The effectiveness of several kinds of heat-conductive media was studied for the measurement. The flatness of both the sample and the heat-conducting block, and the matching between them were found very important for the reduction of the heat resistance of the interfaces. A reasonable agreement was found between the off-diagonal Seebeck coefficient measured by the off-diagonal Seebeck effect and that by the off-diagonal Peltier effect. The steplike feature in the relation between the off-diagonal Seebeck coefficient and the annealing temperature may imply a nonmonotonous change of the Seebeck coefficient along the c axis (S c) with oxygen content.

Notes: Abstract. Phloxine B (2′,4′,5′,7′-tetrabromo-4,5,6,7-tetrachlorofluorescein disodium salt) as a potential photoactive insecticide was rapidly photodegraded in water under various light sources. Two major photolytic products characterized were 2′,4′,5′-tribromo-4,5,6,7-tetrachlorofluorescein and 4′,5′-dibromo-4,5,6,7-tetrachlorofluorescein. The photolysis rates of phloxine B were influenced by various factors including salts in medium, sample pH, and light sources. Half-lives (t½) of phloxine B spiked in different water samples and 2% NaCl solution at 29 ± 1°C ranged from 0.70 to 1.28, 26.3 to 115, and 14.1 to 46.2 hours under 254 nm, 365 nm, and cool white fluorescent lights, respectively. Half-lives of phloxine B in tap, stream, or seawater in a beaker were from 10 to 13 min under sunlight at ambient air temperature. In a range of buffer pH 6–8 at 29 ± 1°C, phloxine B photodegraded slightly faster in acidic solution than in basic solution. The photolysis t½ of phloxine B at 29 ± 1°C was 25, 32, 128, and 755 min in the buffered NaF, NaCl, NaBr, and NaI solutions, respectively. The t½ of phloxine B was 31 min when phloxine B was dissolved in the sodium phosphate buffer as control. Sodium iodide and ammonium iodide photostabilized phloxine B 24 and 27 folds, respectively, when it was compared with the buffer control.

Notes: Abstract  NFBP6 cloned from tobacco is most closely related to petunia FBP6, a putative C-function gene. Also, NFBP6 is expressed specifically in stamens and carpels. Thus, NFBP6 provides a useful tool for molecular characterization of flower development.

Notes: Abstract The microstructure and dry sliding wear behaviour of XDTM ZL201–TiB2 in situ composite were studied by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, pin-on-ring friction and wear testing. The microstructural constituents of the ZL201–TiB2 composite aged at 175°C for various ageing times were found to be dispersive submicrometre TiB2 particles, fine θ″, θ′-precipitates and α-Al solid solutions. As contrasted to the unreinforced ZL201 alloy, the ZL201–TiB2 composite possessed a higher microhardness and wear-resistance as well as a shorter ageing time for peak hardness. With the increase of sliding distance, transition of the dominant wear mechanism for the ZL201–TiB2 composite occurred from adhesive wear to fatigue wear in sliding contacts. At the earlier stages of wear, adhesive wear characteristics featured by mild scratchings and plastic smearing were observed on the worn surface and platelet-type wear debris; but at the later stages, contact fatigue failure of a relatively thick surface layer in relative motion, which revealed a build-up of layer-like structure and the presence of spherical particles of debris, became the dominant factor for the removal of composites. © 1998 Chapman & Hall
