    Notes: Abstract Interest in restoring native ecosystems is resulting in conversion of marginal agricultural lands to bottomland hardwood-dominated forests in the midwestern and midsouthern United States. Growing stock for these efforts typically consists of planted oak (Quercus spp.) and volunteer vegetation. Reports of mixed reforestation success and the lack of post-establishment tree growth data prompted this evaluation of vegetation characteristics of 5- to 7-year-old operational restorations in the Lower Cache River Watershed in southernmost Illinois, U.S.A. Fraxinus pennsylvanica (green ash), Acer negundo (box-elder), and Liquidambar styraciflua (sweetgum) together comprised 77% of all tree stems observed. Full stocking of overstory tree species can be expected to produce a closed canopy stand within 160 m of a forested edge, due primarily to the abundance of rapidly growing volunteer-origin trees. Planted oaks contributed minimally to total tree stocking but were present in sufficient numbers to eventually improve wildlife habitat, and therefore satisfied restoration objectives. Oak height was 23% greater when in the presence of a non-oak tree species. Herbaceous cover was dominated by Solidago gigantea (late goldenrod) and Juncus spp. (rushes). Solidago gigantea was associated with poor growth and low density of non-oak stems, whereas Juncus dudleyi (Dudley's rush) was associated with taller non-oak stems. These results suggest that the presence of volunteer-origin trees is crucial for the creation of full stand stocking that will result in rapid development of a closed canopy forest. Improved success of future reforestation efforts will require more intensive methods to establish adequate stocking beyond 160 m of a forest edge. Methods described here could be adapted for agricultural field to forest restorations in other regions to predict critical distances from volunteer seed sources within which supplemental planting would be unnecessary to meet tree stocking objectives.

    Notes: Transcatheter embolization of congenital or acquired superfluous vascular structure has become routine procedures performed by interventional pediatric cardiologists. Embolization procedure is often part of a collaborative effort with cardiac surgeons to palliate complex congenital heart defect, such as in embolizing aortopulmonary collateral arteries in patient with single ventricle physiology. In other cases, the procedure is the definitive treatment as in embolizing coronary artery fistula. Pediatric cardiologists performing embolization procedures should be familiar with available technologies as well as understand the underlying cardiac anatomy and pathophysiology. This article provides a comprehensive review of presently available embolization agents and technologies. Some of the technologies are used only by interventional radiologists but may be useful to pediatric cardiologists. Specific clinical applications in pediatric cardiology are also discussed with summary of current literature. With continue advancement in transcatheter technology and operator expertise, all unwanted vascular communication should be amenable to transcatheter embolization.     Notes: A coextrusion process was used to fabricate three-directionally macrochanneled tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (TZP) with a calcium phosphate coating layer. The three-directionally connected structure was built by a unique alignment and a lamination of the TZP surrounded by calcium phosphate and carbon black filaments. After a thermal treatment (binder burnout and sintering), a 52 vol% array of 290 μm, three-directionally connected macrochannels, which were clad on the inside with bioactive calcium phosphate, had formed on the sintered TZP body. For a comparison, porous calcium phosphate with a similar structure was also fabricated. The compressive strength (96 MPa) of the three-directionally macrochanneled TZP with a bioactive calcium phosphate layer was much higher than that (24 MPa) of the three-directionally macrochanneled calcium phosphate.

    Notes: Because age-related changes in brain dopaminergic innervation are assumed to influence human disorders involving dopamine (DA), we measured the levels of several presynpatic DAergic markers [DA, homovanillic acid, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), aromatic l-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC), vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2), and dopamine transporter (DAT)] in post-mortem human striatum (caudate and putamen) from 56 neurologically normal subjects aged 1 day to 103 years. Striatal DA levels exhibited pronounced (2- to 3-fold) post-natal increases through adolescence and then decreases during aging. Similarly, TH and AADC increased almost 100% during the first 2 post-natal years; however, the levels of TH and, to a lesser extent, AADC then declined to adult levels by approximately 30 years of age. Although VMAT2 and DAT levels closely paralleled those of TH, resulting in relatively constant TH to transporter ratios during development and aging, a modest but significant decline (13%) in DAT levels was observed in only caudate during aging. This biphasic post-natal pattern of the presynaptic markers suggests that striatal DAergic innervation/neuropil appears to continue to develop well past birth but appears to become overelaborated and undergo regressive remodeling during adolescence. However, during adulthood, a striking discrepancy was observed between the loss of DA and the relative preservation of proteins involved in its biosynthesis and compartmentation. This suggests that declines in DA-related function during adulthood and senescence may be explained by losses in DA per se as opposed to DAergic neuropil.

    Notes: We examined the hypothesis that decreased inhibitory G protein function in diabetic neuropathy is associated with increased protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent phosphorylation of the Goα subunit. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were studied between 4 and 8 weeks after onset of diabetes and compared with aged-matched healthy animals as controls. Opioid-mediated inhibition of forskolin-stimulated cyclic AMP was significantly less in dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) from diabetic rats compared with controls. Activation of PKC in DRGs from control rats was associated with a significant decrease in opioid-mediated inhibition of forskolin-stimulated cyclic AMP that was similar to the decrease in inhibition observed in DRGs from diabetic rats. Both basal and PKC-mediated labeling of Goα with 32Pi was significantly less in DRGs from diabetic rats, supporting increased endogenous PKC-dependent phosphorylation of Goα. Probing of immunoprecipitated Goα with an anti-phospho-serine/threonine specific antibody revealed a significant increase in baseline phosphorylation in diabetic DRGs. Activation of PKC produced a significant increase in phosphorylation in control DRGs but no significant increase in Goα in diabetic DRGs. Phosphorylation of PKC-α was increased, PKC-βII was unchanged and PKC-δ decreased in diabetic DRGs. These results suggest that diminished inhibitory G protein function observed in DRGs neurons from diabetic rats involves an isoform-specific PKC-dependent pathway.

    Notes: We present the Integrated Preference Functional (IPF) for comparing the quality of proposed sets of near-pareto-optimal solutions to bi-criteria optimization problems. Evaluating the quality of such solution sets is one of the key issues in developing and comparing heuristics for multiple objective combinatorial optimization problems. The IPF is a set functional that, given a weight density function provided by a decision maker and a discrete set of solutions for a particular problem, assigns a numerical value to that solution set. This value can be used to compare the quality of different sets of solutions, and therefore provides a robust, quantitative approach for comparing different heuristic, a posteriori solution procedures for difficult multiple objective optimization problems. We provide specific examples of decision maker preference functions and illustrate the calculation of the resulting IPF for specific solution sets and a simple family of combined objectives.

    Notes: Challenge studies were done with proteolytic Clostridium botulinum (103 spores/g) in yeast-and chemical-leavened crumpets (50-g) packaged in air with an ethanol vapor (2-G Ethicap®) generator or in 100% CO2 and stored at ambient temperature (25C) for 30 days. Neurotoxin was detected in all gas- (CO2) packaged crumpets after 5 days regardless of the method of leavening. While neurotoxin was delayed for 10 days in chemical-leavened Ethicap®-packaged crumpets, it was not detected in any similarly packaged yeast-leavened crumpets throughout storage. This inhibition of growth and neurotoxin production by C. botulinum was attributed to the production of ethanol by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the yeast leavened crumpets, in conjunction with the ethanol vapor generated by the Ethicap® sachets (2-G), to levels to inhibitory to the growth of C. botulinum (〉2.8% v/v). Subsequent challenge studies in sterile crumpets inoculated with either C. botulinum (103 spores/g) or a co-inoculum of C. botulinum (103 spores/g) and S. cerevisiae (105 CFU/g) confirmed the significant role (p〈0.001) of S. cerevisiae in enhancing the antibotulinal efficacy of ethanol vapor. These studies showed that the method of crumpet leavening could have a profound effect on the growth of and neurotoxin production by C. botulinum in crumpets packaged under modified atmospheres.
