Notes: High-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) have been demonstrated on both AlN/sapphire templates and sapphire substrates, and the dc characteristics of the fabricated devices were examined at room temperature. Better dc characteristics with high extrinsic transconductances and drain current densities were observed in the HEMTs grown on AlN/sapphire templates when compared with the HEMTs on sapphire substrates. Extrinsic transconductances of 214 and 137 mS/mm for Wg/Lg=15/2 μm HEMTs on AlN/sapphire templates and HEMTs on sapphire substrates were achieved, respectively. The enhancement of dc characteristics with small variations in threshold voltage (≤130 mV) is due to the reduction of dislocation density (1.5×108 cm−2). The decrease of dark spot density has been confirmed in the GaN grown on AlN/sapphire templates using cathodoluminescence measurements. The advantage of using AlN/sapphire templates is that low dislocation density GaN layers at a high temperature can be grown without using low-temperature-grown GaN buffer layers. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary.  We encountered a 2-year-old boy with acquired haemophilia, which rarely occurs in children, who was complicated with nephrotic syndrome. In mid-August 2001, he was diagnosed to have nephrotic syndrome based on the presence of massive proteinuria and hypoalbuminaemia. Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) was normal at 42.4 s at that time. After starting prednisone administration of 2 mg kg−1 day−1, the proteinuria disappeared immediately. However, in early October the same year, subcutaneous ecchymosis and intramuscular bleeding occurred for no apparent reason, and from the examination results his APTT was 106.4 s, factor VIII (FVIII) activity was 〈1%, and the anti-FVIII inhibitor titre was 6.9 BU ml−1. As a result, he was diagnosed to have acquired haemophilia. The anti-nuclear antibody and anti-phospholipid antibody were negative. With recombinant activated FVII, haemostasis was obtained, and after administering three courses of steroid pulse therapy (methyl prednisolone: 20 mg kg−1 day−1 × 3 days), the anti-FVIII inhibitory activity disappeared. An analysis of the immunological and coagulation properties of his FVIII autoantibodies showed the anti-FVIII inhibitory activity to be mediated by IgG1 antibody. In other words, his FVIII inhibitor was a Th1 dominant and it provided a good response to treatment. These findings correlate with those of previous reports. The patient thereafter frequently demonstrated a recurrence of nephrotic syndrome. As a result, he is presently being managed with cyclosporine. However, no recurrence of the anti-FVIII titre has been observed.

Notes: The presence of hollows in cooked rice grains found before in the cultivar Koshihikari was confirmed for 4 more cultivars with various amylose contents. The size, shape, and total volume of hollows differed between cultivars. Hollow volumes increased with grain volume and length before 100 °C was reached, but subsequently decreased during prolonged boiling. The previously proposed mechanism, describing sealing by gelatinized starch of cracks formed during soaking, seemed accurate for all 5 cultivars. Based on the hypothetical model of their formation, a relationship between amylose content and hollow formation was assumed. However, no correlation existed between final hollow volume and shape on 1 side and individual parameters such as flour gelatinization and amylose content on the other side.

Notes: The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II invariant chains are important for an efficient and complete presentation of antigens by MHC class II molecules. Invariant chain-like proteins (Iclp) 1 and 2 were identified by expressed sequence tag analysis from cDNA library of common carp head kidney (HK) stimulated with concanavalin A and lipopolysaccharide. The sequences were 1043 and 1016 bp in length encoding 234 and 198 amino acid proteins, respectively. Based on their predicted structure, the genes harboured transmembrane domain (TMD) and Tg (thyroglobulin) type 1 domains. Expression analysis revealed that both genes were expressed in normal tissues of HK, intestine, brain and gill. By database search, similar homologues were found in Atlantic salmon, fugu and catfish. Phylogenetic and alignment analysis indicate diversity among fish Iclps.

Notes: Fish and shellfish diseases are a constant threat to the sustainability and economic viability of aquaculture. Early diagnosis plays a vital role in management of fish and shellfish diseases. Traditionally, various biochemical and serological tests have been used for fish disease diagnosis. However, the time and expertise required for such diagnoses makes it difficult for aquaculturists to easily adopt them under production conditions. Polymerase chain reaction and probe-based nucleic acid detection have become increasingly popular in fish and shellfish diagnostics. Recently, a novel technique called loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) has been developed, which is highly sensitive and rapid. LAMP has been used for the detection of bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic diseases in both animal and plants. In aquaculture, LAMP-based detection of pathogens like Edwardsiella tarda, E. ictaluri, Nocardia seriolae, Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, white spot syndrome virus and infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus have been reported. In this review, the application of LAMP for the detection of aquaculture-associated pathogens is discussed.

Notes: Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a novel method that amplifies DNA with high specificity and rapidity under isothermal conditions. In this study, using the LAMP method, a protocol for koi herpes virus (KHV) detection in common carp was designed. A set of four primers, two inner and two outer, were designed based on the sequence of the thymidine kinase (tk) gene of KHV. Time and temperature conditions for detection of KHV were optimized for 60 min at 65 °C. The detection limit using LAMP was found to be similar to that by polymerase chain reaction. In this study, we have developed a highly sensitive and rapid diagnostic procedure for detection of KHV infection in common carp.

Notes: Nucleotides from yeast RNA were evaluated for their ability to enhance the non-specific immune responses in carp, Cyprinus carpio. Oral administration of nucleotides to fish daily for 3 days resulted in enhanced responses of phagocytic and nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) activities in kidney phagocytic cells. This activation of kidney cells was observed for at least 10 days post-treatment. The serum complement and lysozyme activities also increased in fish treated with nucleotides. Furthermore, the number of Aeromonas hydrophila in nucleotide-treated fish significantly decreased in the blood, kidney and liver after intraperitoneal injection. Thus yeast nucleotides appear to enhance non-specific immune responses in fish.

Notes: Abstract.  Using effective quark-quark interactions proposed by the Cornell group and by Barbour and Gilchrist, we study the open-channel effects of the ψ states. We take into account the meson-meson final-state interaction in open channels, which is derived microscopically from the quark-level one-boson-exchange model. By applying the complex scaling transformation to the coupled-channel equation, mass shifts and OZI-allowed decay widths of the ψ states are simultaneously evaluated. Agreement with the experimental data is improved considerably.

Notes: The inorganic and organic hybrid compound, [O=VPd(2-Pyd-)4]n (2-Pyd- = 2-pyridonate)(1), was synthesized by assembling its monomer units in the organic solution. X-ray absorptionspectroscopic (XAFS) studies indicated that oxidation states of the vanadium and palladium ions in 1were +IV and +II, and the distance between them was estimated to be 2.698-2.700 Å. Scanningelectron microscope (SEM) observation revealed that the compound 1 shapes in long columnarcrystals with micrometer-sized cross section. EXAFS and IR studies suggested that the O=V oxygenatom interacted to the central palladium ion in the neighboring monomer unit, forming the inorganicinfinite chain structure, -(O=V-Pd)n-, in the columnar crystals of 1
