    Notes: The ability to continuously examine the interior hair structure throughout a treatment process is very important in designing effective hair products. Microscopy is commonly used to observe the interior of hair, but this method requires a sliced sample, making continuous observation impossible. Use of X-ray computed tomography (CT) as a non-destructive measurement has been proposed, but this method has a disadvantage in that it is impossible to obtain full-color interior images of the sample. Thus, a non-destructive method for continuous, full-color examination of the interior hair structure has been lacking. In this study a new method is proposed that enables non-destructive and continuous measurement of the interior hair structure with color information. In our method, optical CT is used for reconstruction of the interior hair structure. Our new theories enabled us to solve the crucial problem of the large observational error of traditional optical CT systems caused by internal light scattering and to make its practical application possible. A new optical CT system based on our method was implemented. This system displayed sufficient accuracy when the phantom image was measured, and clear and full-color cross-sectional images were obtained without destruction of the sample when human hair was observed. When the bleaching and dyeing processes were continuously measured, changes in the interior hair with time could be observed. These results clearly indicate that our new method provides a powerful tool for research and product development.

    Notes: Abstract: Homovanillic acid (HVA) levels of 12 discrete rat brain areas were determined by a mass fragmentographic method using the reaction gas chromatographic technique. The use of reaction gas chromatography increased the sensitivity for determination of HVA. The sensitivity of this method allows measurement of HVA in small amounts of brain tissue. The HVA levels in polar, medial, and lateral fields of prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, septum, amygdala, A12, A13, and A14 dopaminergic neurons were 0.417 ± 0.018 ng/mg protein, 0.689 ± 0.004, 0.753 ± 0.024, 0.496 ± 0.029, 1.311 ± 0.046, 0.555 ± 0.008, 1.949 ± 0.077, 1.109 ± 0.112, and 0.489 ± 0.019, respectively. The HVA levels in these areas are first reported in the present paper.

    Notes: Background  Atopic dermatitis (AD)-specific genes have not yet been clarified.Objectives  To identify gene expression specific to active atopic skin lesions.Methods  We analysed 23 000 genes in skin biopsy samples from 17 patients with AD and four normal controls using Affymetrix oligonucleotide arrays.Results  Four of the 10 genes with the greatest differences in expression between patients and controls, S100A8 and S100A7 (upregulated), and loricrin and filaggrin (downregulated), were epidermal differentiation genes located on 1q21, a locus previously reported to have a genetic linkage with AD.Conclusions  Our results, showing downregulation of the cornified envelope genes and upregulation of the alternative keratinization pathway, are the first to suggest abnormal epidermal differentiation and defective defences as key abnormalities in AD.

    Notes: A rapidly enlarging leg ulcer appeared in a 54-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus receiving aggressive immunosuppressive therapy. Skin biopsy revealed proliferation of hyphae in the midst of a neutrophilic abscess. Culture yielded Rhizopus azygosporus. As no organ involvement was detected by thorough examination, the patient was diagnosed as having primary cutaneous mucormycosis. Although intravenous amphotericin B therapy seemed to be very effective, it had to be discontinued due to nephrotoxicity. She unfortunately died of subsequent disseminated fungal infection and cerebral infarction in which the primary cause could not be determined. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of several antifungal drugs to the isolate were examined and amphotericin B proved to be the only agent that may potentially reach the effective plasma concentration. This is the first case report of cutaneous mucormycosis caused by R. azygosporus.

    Notes: Abstract —Low-cycle fatigue properties were investigated on four carbon steels and five low alloy steels specified in JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) for machine structural use, which are the most commonly used in Japan. Several different heats from each of several representative manufacturers were sampled so as to represent the average fatigue characteristics of current materials. The cyclic deformation behaviour of material was denned by comparing the monotonie yield stress on the extrapolated tensile work hardening curve with the cyclic yield stress in the cyclic stress-strain curve determined by incremental step test. The normalized ferrite-pearlitic steels cyclically hardened, while the quench-tempered martensitic were cyclically stable or softened. The S–N relations derived from the strain-controlled low-cycle tests were compared with the results obtained by load-controlled high-cycle tests. The extrapolated S–N curves based on the cyclic stress-strain curve predicted the fatigue strength in the high-cycle range to be stronger for cyclic-hardening steels, but weaker for cyclic-softening steels. The predicted S–N curves for stable steels coincided with the high cycle test data. The fatigue limit had a proportional relationship with cyclic yield stress, slightly depending on the cyclic deformation behaviour. On the other hand, the cyclic yield stress was found to exhibit a very good linear correlation with the monotonie tensile strength, independent of cyclic deformation behaviour. This explains the empirical law that the fatigue limit is approximately proportional to the tensile strength.

    Notes: Abstract— Sharply notched specimens of a structural low-carbon steel were fatigued under several ratios of the maximum to minimum loads. The growth behavior of a short fatigue crack near the notch tip was analyzed based on crack closure measurements. A fatigue crack first decelerates with increasing crack length, and then accelerates or becomes non-propagating depending on the applied stress. A similar deceleration is seen when the rate is correlated to the stress intensity range. The effective stress intensity range is a unique parameter in correlating the growth rate of a short crack for all the stress levels examined, and the relation is identical to that obtained for a long crack. By considering the increase in crack closure with crack length, a quantitative method is proposed for predicting the non-propagating crack length and the fatigue limit of notched specimens as a function of the applied stress and the notch geometry.

    Notes: Abstract— The fatigue strength of notched specimens of a rotor steel was examined under variable torsional loading which simulates turbine-generator oscillations resulting from the high speed reclosing of transmission-line circuit breakers. The local stress-strain response at a notch root was analysed using Neuber's rule and the resulting complex strain sequences applied to smooth specimens. Using the rain flow analysis and the linear summation rule, fatigue lives of the smooth specimens were successfully predicted from constant amplitude fatigue life data in association with the cyclic stress-strain curve obtained by the incremental step method. Experimental crack initiation lives for notched specimens subjected to variable torsional loading were in excellent agreement with the theoretical curves derived from results on smooth specimens. According to the view that fatigue damage is equated to crack length, the propagation life of a mode II crack along the notch root was predicted to be actually coincident with the life to crack initiation at the notch root denned in this study, i.e. the life at the stage of finding a continuous circumferential crack.

    Notes: Fatigue tests of crack propagation from a precrack in thin-walled tubular specimens made of a medium-carbon steel were performed under cyclic torsion with and without superposed static or cyclic axial loading. The stress ratio of cyclic loading was −1. The fatigue crack-propagation path from a precrack was compared with the predictions based on the maximum tangential stress criterion. The direction of fatigue crack propagation follows the direction of the maximum of the range of the tangential stress, Δσ*θ max, near the crack tip determined from the stress intensity factor (SIF) which was calculated by considering the contacts of crack faces at the minimum load. The SIF calculated from the actual crack path by using the body force method (BFM) showed that the mode II SIF range quickly approached zero after a small amount of crack extension. The crack-propagation rate decreased first and then increased with crack extension. The initial dip of the crack-propagation rate was caused by the development of crack closure with crack extension. As cracks extended a long distance, the propagation rate was faster than the uniaxial data. This acceleration of crack propagation was caused by excessive plasticity near the crack tip.

    Notes: Summary A 29 year-old Japanese woman with hyperemesis gravidarum became comatose and died. The autopsy revealed a typical case of Wernicke's encephalopathy complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Repeated vomiting and parenteral nutrition without vitamins led to Wernicke's encephalopathy and a spontaneous abortion 24 h before death triggered the induction of DIC.
