Notes: Background: Stent design influences the procedural and mid-term results of coronary interventions. The trapezoid-shaped struts of the low pressure stent (LP™-Stent) might improve the outcome by reducing the vascular trauma at deployment. Methods: A total of 133 patients (64.5 ± 8.6 years) with significant de novo coronary lesions (reference diameter ≥2.8 mm, length 〈15 mm, and stenosis ≥70% and 〈100%) were enrolled for single stent deployment and a 6-month clinical and angiographic follow-up. Results: Stents were successfully deployed to 131/133 (98.5%) lesions. In one failed procedure (0.8%), the stenosis could be crossed with another device whereas in the second alternative stents also failed. Following edge dissection after LP™-Stent implantation, in 9/133 (6.8%) patients additional stents were deployed. Follow-up was performed as scheduled after 5.9 ± 0.9 months in 98/122 (80.3%) patients, prematurely for in-stent restenosis in 8/122 (6.6%), and clinically only in 8/122 (6.6%). Deaths, one of cardiac origin (0.9%), occurred in 2/114 (1.8%), and myocardial infarctions in 1/114 (0.9%). The culprit stenoses were dilated from 78.4 ± 9.7% to 23.3 ± 11.0% recurring to 43.1 ± 24.3% at scheduled follow-up. The late loss of 0.6 ± 0.8 mm and late loss index of 0.3 ± 0.5 translated into a binary restenosis rate of 24/98 (24.5%) requiring reintervention in 19/98 (19.4%). Conclusions: In summary, the LP™-Stent is associated with reduced intimal proliferation as reflected by the low late loss index when being compared with either noncoated or passively coated devices and higher in comparison to active coated stents. The considerable dissection rate seems to be related to higher deployment pressures and warrants design modification at the stent's distal edges.

Notes: Yttrium silicates are promising materials for improved oxidation and erosion protection for carbon fiber-reinforced composites. A two-layer coating system of low-pressure plasma-sprayed yttrium silicate on chemical vapor deposition-SiC-precoated C/C–SiC was tested under atmospheric re-entry conditions simulated within a plasma wind tunnel test facility. The thermal expansion behavior of Y2SiO5 and Y2Si2O7 was investigated. The chemical compatibility with and without increasing oxygen partial pressure at the interface of the two-layer system was calculated by the CALPHAD method. The calculations were compared with experimental results. Furthermore, a thermodynamic explanation is presented to understand and predict the observed coating failure mechanism, identified as blister formation.

Notes: The therapeutic benefits of dopamine (DA) agonists after traumatic brain injury (TBI) imply a role for DA systems in mediating functional deficits post-TBI. We investigated how experimental TBI affects striatal dopamine systems using fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV), western blot, and d-amphetamine-induced rotational behavior. Adult male Sprague–Dawley rats were injured by a controlled cortical impact (CCI) delivered unilaterally to the parietal cortex, or were naïve controls. Amphetamine-induced rotational behavior was assessed 10 days post-CCI. Fourteen days post-CCI, animals were anesthetized and underwent FSCV with bilateral striatal carbon fiber microelectrode placement and stimulating electrode placement in the medial forebrain bundle (MFB). Evoked DA overflow was assessed in the striatum as the MFB was electrically stimulated at 60 Hz for 10 s. In 23% of injured animals, but no naïve animals, rotation was observed with amphetamine administration. Compared with naïves, striatal evoked DA overflow was lower for injured animals in the striatum ipsilateral to injury (p 〈 0.05). Injured animals exhibited a decrease in Vmax (52% of naïve, p 〈 0.05) for DA clearance in the hemisphere ipsilateral to injury compared with naïves. Dopamine transporter (DAT) expression was proportionally decreased in the striatum ipsilateral to injury compared with naïve animals (60% of naïve, p 〈 0.05), despite no injury-related changes in vesicular monoamine transporter or D2 receptor expression (DRD2) in this region. Collectively, these data appear to confirm that the clinical efficacy of dopamine agonists in the treatment of TBI may be related to disruptions in the activity of subcortical dopamine systems.

Notes: Abstract –  Aim:  To investigate the relationship between height and dental caries in Brazilian adolescents. Methods:  A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect retrospective data. Of 764 eligible 13-year-old adolescents enrolled in urban private or public schools in a Brazilian town, 652 were clinically examined and interviewed. Data were collected on socioeconomic circumstances, family related variables, oral health behaviour and anthropometric measures (height and weight). Dental caries was measured by decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index. The DMFT was categorized according to two levels of severity (low DMFT ≤ 6; high DMFT 〉 6) using the 75th percentile of the distribution as the cut-off point. Data analysis involved multiple logistic regression. Results:  Adolescents who were the second or later child were 1.90 times more likely to have a high DMFT, whilst being a taller adolescent had a protective effect on caries experience (OR = 0.04; 95% CI = 0.00–0.79). In addition, adolescents from rural areas (OR = 2.74; 95% CI = 1.56–4.82), those whose mothers had less than 8 years of education (OR = 2.10; 95% CI = 1.03–4.27) and those who reported high levels of paternal punishment (OR = 1.60; 95% CI = 1.02–2.52) had an increased risk of having a high DMFT.Conclusion:  There is a relationship between height and dental caries experience in this sample of Brazilian adolescents.

Notes: There is a consistent association between unfavourable socio-economic circumstances and oral health. Although the effects of poor social circumstances in childhood are known to have lasting influences on general health, there is little information on their effects regarding chronic oral diseases. Objective: To assess the relationship between oral health status and socio-economic circumstances at two different periods of adolescents' life. Methods: A two-phase cross sectional study was carried out in Brazil. In Phase I, 652 13-year-olds were clinically examined and interviewed. In the second phase, 311 families were randomly selected for in-depth interviews. Information was collected on several indicators of socio-economic circumstances, family related variables, school grade level, and oral health behaviour, at two different life stages, at birth and at 13 years of age. The outcome variable was oral health status at the age of 13. It was constructed by counting the worst scores of DMFT, gingival bleeding, calculus and dental plaque. The data analysis used stepwise logistic regression. Results: The response rates for phases I and II were 85% and 94%. Boys, those at a lower grade level at school for their age, and those who experienced high levels of material deprivation at birth and at the age of 13 were more likely to have high levels of oral diseases; the odds ratios were 4.12 (1.86–9.16), 2.41 (1.01–5.76) and 4.61 (1.30–16.3), respectively. Conclusion: Brazilian adolescents experiencing adverse socio-economic circumstances at birth and at the age of 13 had high levels of oral diseases.

Notes: Pundits, journalists, and citizens alike often bristle at the idea of politicians ``staying on message," believing that the practice undermines democracy. Scholars have had little to say with respect to whether the issue frames the news media report politicians using to characterize public questions affect how individuals view political battles between Republicans and Democrats over time. In this paper, I explore how the consistency with which partisan political elites frame issues influences whether individuals see important differences between the two major parties. Examinations of content analysis of Newsweek's coverage of three issues (abortion, tax, and energy policies) from 1975-2000 suggest that as the two parties provide increasingly internally homogenous, but externally competitive issue frames, individuals are more likely to believe there is more than the proverbial ``dime's worth of difference" between the two major parties. The evidence supports Sniderman and Bullock's(2004) theory of ``menu dependence" in American politics.

Notes: The objective of this paper is primarily methodological. Using a new specification, we reanalyze the data on worldwide environmental quality investigated by Gene Grossman and Alan Krueger in their well-known paper on the environmental Kuznets curve (which postulates an inverse U-shaped relationship between income level and pollution). This new specification avoids using nonlinear transformations of potentially nonstationary regressors in panel estimation, which is a major unresolved econometric problem plaguing much of the existing literature. We furthermore draw conclusions from fixed effects estimation, which had eluded Grossman and Krueger. Our estimation results indicate the presence of an EKC for only six of the fourteen pollutants, whereas Grossman and Krueger find support for all but one pollutant.

Notes: Design: A nonrandom convenience sample was used to obtain information about the educational level, clinical activities, knowledge base, and skills of nurses involved with in vitro fertilization. Participants: Three hundred thirty-six returned surveys. Results: The Wilcox rank sum test compared nurses in the private practice setting with those in hospital-based services. No differences were found with regard to educational level or perceived level of proficiency with regard to the practice setting or geographic location in the United States. Seventy-three percent of the respondents indicated their primary role was in direct patient care; 31% stated they had been active in artificial reproductive nursing less than 5 years. Graduate level education was not correlated with perceived level of expertise but did correlate with length of clinical experience in assisted reproductive nursing and with certification. Conclusion: Assisted reproductive nursing currently does not meet the standards for classification as an advanced practice nursing group. Action to further the area of reproductive nursing to a specialty in nursing or an advanced practice level is worth consideration for this highly specialized and unique group of nurses.
