Notes: Epitaxial growth of CoSi2 on (111)Si inside two-dimensional and linear oxide openings by rapid thermal annealing has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Both annealing temperature and time were found to be critical in obtaining 100% epitaxy. The size of oxide openings and annealing temperature were found to exert strong influences on the morphology of epitaxial CoSi2 on silicon. The faceting of CoSi2 was found to occur at a lower temperature inside oxide openings of smaller size. The change in morphology of epitaxial CoSi2 with the size of oxide openings in the present study indicated that interfacial energy and/or stress, in addition to the surface energy, are important in determining the morphology of epitaxial CoSi2 on (111)Si.

Notes: The antimicrobial enrofloxacin (Baytril®, Bayer) was evaluated under field conditions in the winter months for treatment of clinical Aeromonas salmonicida infections in salmonids by feeding medicated diets. Two trials in which lake trout Salvelinus namaycush were treated with enrofloxacin at 10mg/kg per d for 10d resulted in reduced mortalities when compared to non-medicated controls. A third trial in which Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were treated required 20d for the fish to consume the 10d medicated ration, due to poor feeding. This resulted in an effective dose of 5mg/kg per d for 20d. In spite of the lower feeding activity, a reduction in mortalities in medicated fish was observed. Tissue concentrations of drug were in excess of minimum inhibitory concentrations of the drug for the A. salmonicida isolates tested.

Notes: Based upon Myers (1974) adjusted net present value model, this paper develops a financial valuation framework to account for flotation costs in the utility's rate determination process. The zero adjusted net present value criterion established in the paper is used as a basis in measuring the ‘fair’ returns to the utility. It is demonstrated that both the Arzac-Marcus (1981) and the conventional flotation cost adjustment formulas maintain the utility shareholders' wealth. However, the Arzac-Marcus formula fails to charge the utility customers properly across time while the conventional approach preserves the ‘fair’ pricing of the utility services to the customers.

Notes: Abstract The biochemical composition of physiologically moist mucosa and serosa of rabbit bladder before and after bladder outlet obstruction was determined by means of FT-IR spectroscopy with the ATR method and second-derivative analysis. A predominantly β-sheet structure was found in the amide I band for mucosa and serosa before and after obstruction, but the random coil structure increased in both obstructed bladder samples. However, the major β-sheet structure associated with some α-helical structure in the amide II band of mucosa and serosa for non-obstructed bladder changed into a predominanly α-helical structure after bladder obstruction. The obstructed bladder serosa was more pronounced. The amount of glycoproteins doubled in the obstructed bladder serosa, but did not change in the bladder mucosa.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to measure the level of cytokines produced by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC) in patients with aplastic anemia (AA) and to determine their effect on the clonal growth of normal bone marrow (BM) cells. Twenty-one patients with AA and 11 normal controls were enrolled in this study. Medium conditioned by PBMNC of AA patients in the presence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was found to be suppressive to the colony growth of normal BM cells. Thus, we further determined the presence in the PBMNC-conditioned medium (CM) of both inhibitory cytokines: macrophage inflammatory protein-1α (MIP-1α), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), transforming growth factor-β2 (TGF-β2), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and stimulatory cytokines: interleukin-3 (IL-3) and stem cell factor (SCF). Spontaneous production of MlP-1α was higher in the AA patients than the normal controls (1887±174 pg/ml vs 1643±93 pg/ml), but the difference was not significant. After LPS stimulation, the production of MIP-1α was markedly increased in the AA patients, and its level was significantly higher than that of the normal controls (2360±149 pg/ml vs 1517±92 pg/ml, p=0.0022). The level of TNFα was also higher in the AA patients. However, IFN-γ, TGF-β2, SCF, and IL-3 were not detectable in the PBMNC-CM of either AA patients or normals. The myelopoietic suppressing effect of AA-PBMNC-CM from each AA patient was significantly blocked by pretreatment with anti-TNF-α, resulting in a colony-forming enhancement of 174%±12%. A similar effect was noted in six of 11 AA patients by pretreatment with anti-MIP-1α. We conclude that TNFα and MIP-1α can be overproduced by the PBMNC of some AA patients, which may play a role in the progression of AA.

Notes: Abstract  Primary allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (allo-PBSCT) has not been previously described in the treatment of severe aplastic anemia (SAA). We report a patient with SAA who underwent primary allo-PBSCT with cells from her HLA-identical sibling and achieved rapid bone marrow reconstitution. The patient has been in complete remission with normal blood counts for 9 months following allo-PBSCT. This suggests that primary allo-PBSCT is a safe and effective alternative in the treatment of SAA.

Notes: Abstract Upregulation of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and polyamine levels is found in the kidney of MRL-lpr/lpr (lpr) mouse, an animal model of lupus. To understand the molecular genetics of ODC regulation inlpr mouse, we analyzed ODC mRNA and activity in the kidney oflpr and normal BALB/c and MRL-+/+ mice. Although ODC activity was significantly higher inlpr kidney, its mRNA level was lower compared to normal strains, as measured by Northern blot hybridization. Treatment oflpr mouse with difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) reduced ODC activity inlpr kidney to the level of normal strains. In contrast, ODC mRNA level increased 12-fold by DFMO treatment. These results suggest that post-transcriptional modification of ODC inlpr genetic background might be responsible for increased ODC activity and polyamines. The beneficial effect of DFMO on murine lupus suggests a pathogenic role for altered ODC regulation inlpr mouse.

Notes: Abstract Effective adjunctive therapies for colorectal carcinoma are clearly needed. We evaluated the cytotoxic responses in vitro of human colon carcinoma cell lines to combined modalities: 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin (5-FU/LV), carboplatin (CP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and hyperthermia (HTX). Cytotoxicity was evaluated in a cell proliferation assay using crystal violet staining. 5-FU/LV was administered 2–3 days before TNF and CP, followed 1 h later by HTX. These cell lines were relatively resistant to HTX alone (42°C for 2 h), but were heterogeneous in their responses to various doses of the other single agents. This heterogeneity was also evident for combined modalities: the geneity was also evident for combined modalities: the HCT-15 cell line exhibited significant supra-additivity for selected doses of CP, TNF and 5-FU/LV, which was further enhanced by hyperthermia. In contrast, the HT-29 cell line did not demonstrate a strong pattern for supra-additivity, whereas the DLD-1 cell line had an intermediate response. Thus, our results suggest one approach to develop effective and dose-sparing multimodality therapeutic regimens for colon adenocarcinoma.

Notes: Abstract We present the MRI findings of cerebral and optic pathway damage in the acute and subacute stages of methanol intoxication. In the acute stage, CT and MRI showed bilateral haemorrhagic necrosis of the corpus striatum and infarcts in the anterior and middle cerebral arterial territories. MRI in the subacute stage demonstrated atrophy of the optic chiasm and prechiasmatic optic nerves in addition to the cerebral infarcts. The patient survived, with total blindness.
