    Notes: Abstract Three infants were found to have infradiaphragmatic masses by prenatal ultrasound. Postnatal imaging studies confirmed the presence of these masses, which were suspected of being intra-abdominal malignancies (neuroblastoma). The other principal differential diagnosis was extralobar pulmonary sequestration (EPS). Intraoperative findings were consistent with EPS, which was confirmed by histologic examination. We present these three infants, review the literature, and discuss the evaluation and treatment of infradiaphragmatic EPS.

    Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. Interleukin-1β is a putative mediator of pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction and damage in Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. To better understand the molecular mechanisms involved in IL-1β effects, we carried out a differential display of mRNA by RT-PCR to identify novel cytokine-regulated genes. Methods. Fluorescence activated cell sorting-purified rat pancreatic beta-cells were exposed for 6 or 24 h to IL-1β. Differentially expressed cDNA bands were cloned and then identified by comparing their sequences with data from the GenBank. Differential gene expression was confirmed by RT-PCR using specific primers. Results. Interleukin-1β increased the expression of adenine nucleotide translocator-1, phospholipase D-1 and cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant-1 and decreased expression of the protein tyrosine phosphatase-like protein IA-2. Interleukin-1β-induced differential expression of these genes in beta cells was confirmed by RT-PCR. In additional studies, IL-1β was shown to induce chemokines other than cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant-1, including cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant-3 and monocyte chemotactic protein-1. Conclusion/interpretation. Our observations indicate that IL-1β modifies the expression of several genes in pancreatic beta cells. These genes may affect both function, viability and beta-cell recognition by the immune system. Functional characterization of the mRNAs which have been identified could facilitate a better understanding of the mechanisms leading to beta-cell destruction in Type I diabetes.     Notes: The curing characteristics of unaccelerated sulfur vulcanization of ENR 25 and ENR 50 were studied in the temperature range from 100-180°C. The range of sulfur loading was from 1.5 to 6.5 phr. The scorch time was determined by Mooney Shearing Disk Viscometer whereas the initial cure rate, maximum torque, and reversion properties were obtained from the Moving Die Rheometer (MDR 2000). Results shows that ENR 25 gives a longer scorch time than ENR 50, an observation similar to that in an accelerated system reported earlier. For temperature 〈 120°C, scorch time depends exponentially on sulfur loading for both rubbers. However, this dependence diminishes as temperature is increased. This observation is attributed to the availability of activated sulfur molecules for vulcanization. The initial cure rate and maximum torque increases with increasing sulfur loading. ENR 50, however, exhibits higher value than ENR 25, suggesting faster cure in the former. For a fixed sulfur loading, reversion is a time and temperature-dependent phenomenon. It decreases with increasing sulfur loading because of the increase of cross-linking density for both rubbers stuided. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: In this paper, the blends of the carbon dioxide copolymer, poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), with nitrile rubber (NBR) were studied by DSC, DMA, TEM and TG. PPC can enhance the mechanical properties of NBR, while oil resistance and tensile set at break of NBR/PPC systems were as good as that of NBR. The coagent of triallylisocyanurate or maleic anhydride with carbon black can much improve the curing efficiency of dicumyl peroxide in NBR/PPC systems. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: This paper develops a numerical technique for determining the shape sensitivity parameters in steady metal- forming processes such as drawing and rolling. The adjoint method is applied to the discrete non-linear system of equations in the finite element model in order to determine the discrete matrix of sensitivity parameters. In this work, two specific cases are considered. The first case involves determining the sensitivity of the process power requirement to the process geometry and the second case involves determining the sensitivity of the internal state variable distribution in the final product to the process geometry. The process geometry is assumed to be characterized by a finite number of shape parameters. The internal state variable distribution in this case represents the resistance to plastic flow and is considered to be related to the quality of the final product. Numerical examples for a simple drawing process are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm.
