Notes: Abstract The clinical application of cardiac prostheses requires a pump that has the highest reliability and no defects. Considering the possibility of clinical implantation in the future, quality control and inspection systems have been incorporated into the fabrication process of biolised cardiac prostheses. Inspection procedures are employed at every strategic point in the pump fabrication process, including visual inspection, dimensional check, material test, performance test and s.e.m. observation. Over the past one-and-a-half years we have inspected 480 components and assemblies from 49 total artificial hearts and left-ventricular assist devices. A total of 93 defects and failures were detected by the inspection system, of which 48 defects were repaired in the fabrication lines. The remaining components were rejected and removed from the pump fabrication lines. The quality of trileaflet dura mater valves was significantly improved by the incorporation of the quality-control system. Since most of the fabrication and assembly are performed manually at the present time, the quality control has contributed greatly to improved device reliability.

Notes: Three kinds of trapped radicals are observed in poly(maleic anhydride) (Poly-MAH) which were prepared by the use of radical initiators such as AIBN or BPO. It was found that these radicals were transformed to the active species so as to initiate the cationic polymerization. The structure of these radicals was studied by the ESR and the kinetic analysis of MAH polymerization in the presence of various additives.

Notes: The cationic polymerization of 1,2-butylene oxide initiated by radical catalysts has been investigated in detail in the presence of maleic anhydride. The active species of this ionic polymerization was thought to be a conjugated radical of poly(maleic anhydride).

Notes: In a previous paper1 it was mentioned that trapped radicals in poly(maleic anhydride) (Poly-MAH) have the ability to initiate cationic polymerization. In this paper, the cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) is described using Poly-MAH as the initiator. These radicals show different behavior during polymerization depending upon their structure. In particular, large conjugated radicals initiate ionic polymerizations.

Notes: Tensile and fatigue properties were studied on three kinds of segmented polyether polyurethanes developed for blood pump applications. To study the effects of plasma constituents, specimens were immersed in a cholesterol-lipid solution whose composition is similar to that of plasma. The results obtained were compared with those observed in a saline solution which had been reported previously. Immersion in the cholesterol-lipid solution has influence on the mechanical properties of Toyobo TM5 polyurethane and Avcothane 51: Its effect is enhanced by cyclic deformation. Cholesterol-lipids change the mechanical characteristics of Avcothane 51 more remarkably than those of Toyobo TM5 polyurethane possibly because the former contains about 10% silicone. On the other hand, there is little effect of the constituents of the cholesterollipid solution on the static and dynamic mechanical properties of Biomer, although moisture and cyclic deformation have some influence on the mechanical characteristics.
