    Notes: Rate constants for inelastic processes in Na2 (v,j)–Ne, Ar, Na collisions are determined at a mean collision energy of the order of 1 meV in a supersonic seeded beam arrangement. The initial vibrational state v and rotational state j is varied in the range 4≤v≤35 and 5≤j≤25. The Na2 molecules are excited by Franck–Condon pumping near the transition region to free molecular flow and the flux of molecules which survive in the level (v,j) is monitored far downstream behind a small aperture. It is shown that elastic processes do not contribute to the observed signal. The magnitude of the cross section for the sum of all inelastic processes is as large as several hundred A(ring)2. It is found that the vibrational motion of the molecule, which carries an energy of up to 500 meV, strongly influences the collision dynamics. The rate constant increases with v by about 35% within the range of vibrational levels studied here. Some state-to-state rate constants are also reported. The experimental results are in good agreement with data from quasiclassical trajectory calculations on a semiempirical bond-distance-dependent potential surface. The observations can be rationalized by realizing that the long range attraction increases with vibrational excitation since the polarizability of the molecule increases. Furthermore, the vibrational excitation in combination with the relatively long interaction time due to the low collision energy enhances the probability for a change of the initial quantum state of the molecule.

    Notes: In order to implement a new setup for neutral–beam activated impact excitation spectroscopy at the nuclear fusion experiment "TEXTOR'' (Tokamak Experiment for Technology Oriented Research) a 2.45 GHz ECR multicusp ion source was built. Special emphasis was given to extract an intense He+-ion beam, which will be used in the forthcoming experiment. After neutralization the slow (2.2 × 107 cm/s, 1 keV) He atoms are injected into the tokamak plasma. Necessarily the atom beam has to have a small divergence. To optimize the extraction optics, calculations concerning the multihole extraction aperture have been made, taking different ECR-plasma parameters into account. The divergence shows a strong dependence on the extracted beam current density ((approximately-greater-than)5 mA/cm2) and the chosen optics. The ion source has to be operated in a pulsed mode (max. 5 kHz, duty cycle 50%) due to experimental requirements.

    Notes: A method is described for transferring deposited diamond films to a second substrate, thereby providing access to the diamond film back surface and also allowing post-deposition contact formation to both surfaces of the film. The availability of both sides of the diamond film allows increased experimental control and flexibility for investigation of electrical properties and contact phenomena. The films are deposited in a microwave plasma disk reactor onto silicon substrates and transferred to epoxy substrates. Also presented is a comparison of the roughness of the top and bottom film surfaces, a Raman spectrum of the transferred film, and current-voltage characteristics of samples with dual-side contacts.

    Notes: One hundred ASA grade 1 and 2 patients requiring orotracheal intubation for various general surgical procedures were randomly assigned to receive either expert rigid laryngoscopic or novice fibreoptic orotracheal intubation under total intravenous anaesthesia. Five anaesthesia residents in the 4th year, with no prior experience in fibreoptic laryngoscopy, participated in a fibreoptic training course, viewing two instructional videos and practising on the intubation manikin. Each resident intubated 20 patients in a randomised fashion either as an expert laryngoscopist or as a fibreoptic novice. The time (SEM) to achieve successful intubation was statistically different for fibreoptic and rigid intubation (77.2 (5.1) s vs 17.7 (1.6) s, p 〈 0.01). The time to achieve successful rigid laryngoscopic intubation remained constant over the ten intubations, whereas time required for fibreoptic intubation decreases significantly (p 〈 0.01). The learning objectives (fibreoptic intubation times in 60 s or less and with 90% or greater success rate on the first intubation attempt) were met by all residents. The haemodynamic profile was similar for fibreoptically intubated and conventionally intubated patients and there was no difference between the first two or the last two fibreoptive or rigid intubations. The study was designed to detect a difference of 10% in means (assuming β= 0.05 and 0.2). The incidence of postoperative sore throat, dysphagia or hoarsensess was similar in both groups. We conclude that routine fibreoptic orotracheal intubation in ASA grades 1 and 2 surgical patients is justifiable for teaching this valuable technique. since it increases clinical exposure to fibreoptic intubation, which should be learned and mastered by all anaesthetic residents by completion of their residency.
